Whether you are at ILB or OLB, you are one of the only positions on the field that has to make an impact in all facets of the game.
Here, we take a look at 2023 Georgia LBs that should see some D1 offers roll in soon.
Colton Smith Colton Smith 6'2" | 225 lbs | LB Brentwood | 2023 State GA | 6’2 | Brentwood
I was able to get some eyes on Smith last month, and he is one of the most physically impressive prospects I have seen. At 225, he is well built and showcases some top-tier speed and athleticism. On film, you can see Smith line up just about everywhere in the front 7, but spends most of his time rushing off the edge. There is reason to believe that his future is at OLB. After all, he is physical enough to match up against offensive tackles and quick enough to beat them in 1 on 1’s. That ability to rush the passer should translate to the ability to come downhill from the ILB position as well. Again, Smith is physically one of the most impressive athletes you will see. That coupled with his versatility and physicality, and you have someone who should see their recruitment pick up soon.
Christian Newbern | 6’1 | Bleckley County
Newbern is yet another prospect that can play multiple positions effectively. This time, he makes his mark with his speed. Newbern looks to have legitimate 4.6 speed, and he shows it off on film. He spends the majority of his time lined up at OLB, where he absolutely terrorizes opposing QBs. He is simply just too quick to keep out of the backfield, and his pursuit skills make him even more dangerous. He also spends a fair amount of time lined up at DB. He has the speed and the physicality to do so. At 6’1 and 220, he is built like a running back with a low center of gravity. Because of that, he is more than capable of lining up in the box. Newbern is a rare athlete who does a lot of things really well. Has visited schools like Auburn, Georgia, Florida State, and Georgia Southern. Expect him to start gaining some traction on the trail.
Isaac Hubert | 6’2 | Creekview
Hubert has some of the most fun film to watch in the entire state. He truly looks and plays the part of a PO5 caliber defender. Simply put, Hubert is one of the most explosiveness and physical high school football players you might ever see. He spends his time coming off the edge at either OLB or DE. From there, he is in the backfield as soon as the ball is snapped. At the point of attack, he simply just levels every player with an opposing team’s jersey on. To go along with his explosiveness, he is also built like a bull. He is so fast and physical that he even spent time on offense at running back, and there is reason to believe he could also play TE or HB at the next level. Hubert has just one recorded offer to Jacksonville State, but there is no reason that offer list shouldn’t grow exponentially.
Mavrick Torrico Mavrick Torrico 6'0" | 215 lbs | LB Blessed Trinity | 2023 State GA | 6’0 | Blessed Trinity
Torrico is another unbelievably explosive and physical prospect. Except for this time, he shows it off from the ILB position. Perhaps his most impressive attribute is his ability to rush the passer from the middle of the defense. He times his blitzes perfectly, and has some elite speed that he uses to track down the QB. He also has some long arms, which helps with tackling. Having someone in the middle of your defense with a combination of speed and power is huge. Not only can he come downhill, but he can also match up with skill players in coverage and run sideline to sideline. Torrico is a big-time athlete that can make plays all over the field.
Kyle Elphick | 6’2 | Fellowship Christian
You can tell on film that Elphick is a smart football player who plays within himself. He has great athleticism and speed for his size, but his football IQ and patience are what really set him apart. Elphick does a great job of reading gaps. Instead of just shooting through a gap and risk overpursuing, he sits in it and patiently waits for the play to develop. His long frame allows him to swallow up ball carriers that come through said gap. Again, he is a big-time athlete as well. So much so that he also lines up at TE on offense, and is effective as well. Elphick has received plenty of interest from schools like Wake Forest and Georgia Tech, so an offer from someone should be just around the corner.
