In this series, we will be evaluating tape that is sent in to us via Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and email among other sources. Let’s check out the first group of prospects who stood out via these various platforms!
Donovin Green | 2023 ATH
Playing quarterback among many other positions this season, Donovin Green put up some quite impressive film this season. Standing at 6’0″ 175, Green has the frame that will allow him to play defensive back or wide out at the next level. This past year, he totaled 17 TDs, 3 INTs, and multiple pass break ups. Green plays physical, fast, and tough football. He refuses to give receivers a free release at the line of scrimmage while on defense, and plays the ball well in the air. On the ground, Green has special speed and field vision that allow him to score from anywhere. Love this guy’s upside and expecting big things from him this spring in camps.
Omarion Blakes | 2023 ATH
The cliché phrase in scouting is finding a guy that “does it all.” Junior athlete Omarion Blakes does exactly that. Originally a WR, Blakes stepped in at the quarterback position this season after an injury to the starter and had tremendous success this season. Totaling 1,467 all purpose yards, 17 TDs, and 6 INTs, Blakes was a force all over the field. A fast and explosive athlete, Blakes makes something out of nothing any time he has the ball in his hands. He has great contact balance and can make defenders miss in space. McShaw relied on Blakes in key situations and for a good reason. Currently lists an offer from Mississippi Delta, but that list should grow this spring.
Garrison Davis | 2025 QB
Although Brandon QB Garrison Davis spent the majority of his 2021 season on JV, the film and potential he posted is special. The freshman has advanced pocket mechanics for his age. His footwork is clean on his drop backs, and when pressure comes, he gradually steps up in the pocket to deliver an accurate strike downfield. Davis has a quick release and can throw from a variety of arm angles. He steps into his throw and gets great velocity on intermediate and deep balls. What stands out most is his ability to read the defense and find his open man. Looking for big things from Davis in his coming years. The Bulldogs have a good one.
Lekih Freeman | 2024 DB
As a sophomore, the Saltillo product held his own and was a gamechanger against some of the state’s best competition. When evaluating defensive backs, the primary attribute coaches look for is ball skills, and Freeman certainly has those. Freeman does a great job at staying with his receiver and quickly turning his head around to make a play on the ball in the air. He shows good speed in the open field and loose hips that allow him to transition easily. Although he isn’t the biggest, Freeman isn’t afraid of stepping up and make a tackle.
CJ Edwards | 2023 LB
Out of Charleston High School, CJ Edwards was one of the most well rounded inside backers in the state of Mississippi this last season. Edwards has the skillset that many coaches are looking for these days. While he can play the run well, he can also cover in space and make plays against the pass. Edwards has a stocky frame and can deliver big blows to ball carriers coming his way. He reads his keys well and runs to the football each and every snap. In the run game, Edwards takes on blockers well and uses his length to create separation. Really talented backer that should increase his stock this spring.
Button Lakes | 2023 OL
A big time offensive lineman out of Houston High School, Lakes starts at tackle but is capable of playing any of the offensive line positions at the next level. At 6’1″ 295, Lakes has great size to project at guard or center when his high school playing career is over. At Houston last season, Lakes put up some of the most fun OL tape I’ve seen in a bit. This is a mean and nasty kid who wants to dominate whoever is across the ball from him. Lakes has good flexibility and can bend in space and into his stance. He has natural power from his lower body that allows him to bully defensive lineman into the ground. In the screen game, Lakes has enough athleticism to chase down a defensive back or linebacker at the next level. Very intriguing offensive line prospect that should rise this offseason.
Amari Butler | 2023 DB
A rangy DB out of Petal, Amari Butler posted a 31 tackle, 1 INT, 11 PBU season this past year. As a junior, Butler was one of the most impressive zone corners that has popped up onto our radar. He has a smooth backpedal and reads the eyes of the opposing team’s quarterback well. When the ball is in the air, Butler can shift gears and break on it. Although he isn’t the tallest, this is a guy that can go up and get the ball at its highest point. Butler claims a 32 inch vertical and looks to have every bit of that on tape. Really like this guy and think he will do well at camps this offseason.
