As the University of Louisville continues to build its impressive 2023 recruiting class, Louisville and the rest of Jefferson County continues to produce top-notch high school football talent! Many of the top 2023 ranked players from the state of Kentucky are not committed to any schools but that can change soon. Today we are going to look at 5 talented 2023-class defensive players from Louisville and the Jefferson County area. [player_tooltip player_id="145016" first="Micah" last="Carter"] | 6-1/235lb, DL | Louisville St. Xavier High School Micah has incredibly fast reflexes that allow him to get past his opposing guard quickly. This threat puts pressure on opposing quarterbacks to make quick decisions which also enables Micah to quickly detect where the quarterback is going to go with the ball. Along with that, Micah can accelerate quickly after getting past the OL to put pressure on the ball-handler. Being able to tread quickly and with 235 pounds of force produces a great threat to any offensive line in the game. [player_tooltip player_id="145013" first="William" last="Spencer"] | 6-5/315lb, DL | Louisville Male High School Spencer is an absolute brute to deal with for an opposing offense trying to protect the Quarterback. With his far-fetched strength, Spencer can throw down his opposing guard with ease. Spencer also inherits an incredible ability to transition quickly to wherever the ball is found on the field. It is unbelievable how quickly Spencer can get off his feet despite his bigger body composition. Spencer's brute force and quickness can easily be comparable to NFL pro bowl Defensive End Akiem Hicks. [player_tooltip player_id="145759" first="Kaden" last="Briggs"] | 6-3/250lb, DE | Louisville Butler High School Kaden makes a good example of a textbook DE. Although he can play DT as well, Briggs's talent is shown at the DE position as his speed allows him to blow past any guard to put pressure on the quarterback. His acceleration from the DE position is incredibly remarkable which further boosts his speed off the end. A trait that truly defines how scary Briggs is to an opposing offensive line is his work with his hands. With fast reflexes, once the ball is snapped, Briggs can get past the opposing guard using his talented hand skills with little to no effort. Jeremiah Collins | 6-2/150lb, CB | Louisville Male High School The University of Louisville commit had a stellar junior season playing alongside his defensive star teammate [player_tooltip player_id="145013" first="William" last="Spencer"]. Although recruited as a CB, Jeremiah can play on both sides of the field, which further boosts his athletic resume. What is truly unique about Collins's ability on the football field is his lateral quickness, which helps him easily juke past players after an interception recovery, and even get past another CB when playing receiver. Along with his lateral quickness is his terrific ability to read the ball and know where it is going to be thrown. Although not being placed as a traditional Free safety, Collins can imitate the traits of an FS and use them to his advantage while playing the nickelback. Korrey Mattingly | 5-10/155lb, DB | Louisville Male High School Louisville Male High School has produced tons of defensive talent but it does not stop there! Korrey Mattingly can hit an opposing player with the force of a 250lb+ lineman but is nearly 100 pounds lighter! With his speed and ability to track down the ball-handler, an opposing player does not want to cross paths with Mattingly. It is truly remarkable how Mattingly can tackle nearly any player on the football field no matter the size difference.
