While we’ve yet to release a full ranking of rising sophomores, we have several players slated to debut in the initial top 25 in late spring. These guys, plus a few more will be on that list and we think you should know about them sooner rather than later. Here, we’ll look at five standouts on the offensive side of the ball.
Quinn McCaffrey Quinn McCaffrey 6'4" | 190 lbs | ATH JH Rose | 2025 State NC , 6’4 180, Ath.- John Paul II
McCaffrey’s biggest contributions last season were on the defensive side of the ball, but his future is at receiver. He already possesses great size and the fact that he was able to play both ways as a freshman is a testament to his talent. He was mainly used on shorter routes as a freshman, but flashed the ability to break tackles in the open field and make big plays.
Max Guest Max Guest 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB AC Reynolds | 2025 NC , 5’9 170, RB- AC Reynolds
The first thing that stands out about guest is that he runs more like a veteran than a freshman. He runs with great pad level and he explodes through the hole. He can do a lot of different things, including contributing as a receiver and return man. Over the course of the season, his vision improved and he became more physical as a ball carrier. I think he’s a guy that should get some immediate college interest this offseason.
JJ Gordon JJ Gordon 5'11" | 175 lbs | ATH Ashbrook | 2025 State NC , 5’11 165, RB- North Gaston
North Gaston has developed a bit of a reputation in recent years for having talented young players but Gordon may be the best in recent memory. He has excellent vision and does well to avoid big hits in the open field and fall forward for extra yards. Also a safety, he follows his blocks well and as continues to add strength and speed he’s going to be one of the top backs in the state.
Jared Lockhart Jared Lockhart 6'4" | 175 lbs | QB Porter Ridge | 2025 State NC , 6’1 150, QB- West Mecklenburg
Lockhart was one of the top freshmen quarterbacks in the state last season despite playing a high level of competition. He has plenty of room to add strength, but already displays good arm strength. I like his ability to escape the pocket and throw on the run and he delivers a catchable ball. He’s ahead of the curve with a lot of starting varsity experience, which should bode well for him moving forward. I’m looking for him to add some weight this offseason and be ready to roll in the fall.
David Sanders Jr, 6’6 245, OL- Providence Day
While we have yet to finalize the first 2025 rankings, we do know Sanders will be very near the top, possibly in the No. 1 position. Already, he holds multiple Power Five offers, including a recent string of offers from some teams in the mid-Atlantic. He has an excellent frame to add good weight and is very strong as a run blocker. He, like most younger tackles, can get a bit upright in pass protection, but he has so much upside and is a name to know for the next few years.
