Earlier this week we published the updated 2023 rankings. Here is Part 2 of the Fastest Stock Risers who experienced the biggest leaps up the rankings compared to the last rankings in September. This is Part 2 of a 2-part series.
[player_tooltip player_id="138082" first="Brent" last="Miller"], Hope Christian: Miller emerged as one of the best two-way players in Class 3A last season, serving as the perfect complement to dynamic QB [player_tooltip player_id="26270" first="James" last="Jenkins"]. Miller rushed for 892 yards and 11 TD on 121 carries and made 120 tackles on defense. With Jenkins graduating, Miller could become the face of the Huskies in 2022.
[player_tooltip player_id="208819" first="Aidan" last="Granado"], Silver: Because of geography, few players in the state face the challenges Granado does as far as getting noticed. But Granado did a great job in 2021 crashing through those barriers by rushing for 1,632 yards on 147 carries, the third highest total in the state. Silver is moving into a new district (4A-3) in 2022, where they’ll face Grants, St. Pius X and Valencia.
[player_tooltip player_id="138091" first="Ace" last="Gonzalez"], Robertson: Gonzalez was a two-way standout for the Class 3A champions, but it was on defense where he really made his mark statistically. Gonzalez, lining up at outside linebacker, finished with the second highest number of tackles in the state with 148. QB [player_tooltip player_id="26261" first="Matthew" last="Gonzales"] departs, so Gonzalez could become one of the undisputed team leaders for the Cardinals.
[player_tooltip player_id="137885" first="Paul" last="Cieremans"], Los Lunas: Few players in New Mexico had a better season than Cieremans. He crashed the 1,000-1,000 club with 1,347 passing yards and 1,544 rushing yards while leading the Tigers to its first – and perhaps only – Class 5A championship. Now Los Lunas makes the jump to Class 6A. Watching Cieremans operate against defenses at the highest level will be one of 2022’s most intriguing storylines.
[player_tooltip player_id="139523" first="Nic" last="Trujillo"], Cleveland: The Storm were so talented in 2021 that a player of Trujillo’s caliber gets lost in the names. But Trujillo is one of the state’s top receivers and he proved it by catching 51 passes for 906 yards and 10 TD. The Storm return most of their top offensive skill players in 2022, so expect them to keep pressing on the gas, even with a new head coach.
[player_tooltip player_id="137930" first="Isaiah" last="Abeyta"], Centennial: The Hawks don’t post their statistics on MaxPreps but if you followed the adventures of the Centennial football team on a weekly basis through the local newspaper or elsewhere, Abeyta’s feats were chronicled on a weekly basis. He was clearly QB [player_tooltip player_id="26267" first="Ian" last="Lopez"]’s favorite target in the passing game and made several clutch TD grabs. Abeyta and RB [player_tooltip player_id="208691" first="Mikah" last="Gutierrez"] will form a dynamic WR-DB combination in 2022.
[player_tooltip player_id="138039" first="Robert" last="Nora"], Clovis: Nora showed flashes of his ability last spring when he averaged close to 27 yards per reception, but he really blossomed into a major offensive threat in the fall, catching 33 passes for 674 yards and rushing 35 times for over 300 yards. He also returned kickoffs and finished with over 1,000 combined yards. Nora and promising 2024 RB Kash Roberts figure to lead the Clovis offense in 2022.
