We revealed our first 2024 prospect rankings on Monday. We’re now in the process of taking an in-depth look at each of the positions. Here are the Top 10 2024 wide receivers (listed by ranking) in the state of New Mexico:
1. [player_tooltip player_id="274714" first="Zakye" last="Hawkins"], Las Cruces: Watch his film and you’ll understand why Hawkins tops the list. He’s dynamic with elite athleticism. He proved it as a sophomore this past season with numerous acrobatic catches for the Bulldawgs. He finished with 29 receptions for 690 yards and 11 TD. But the Bulldawgs also utilize him on the ground as well, and he added 282 rushing yards and 4 TD. Las Cruces must settle on a quarterback but look for great things from Hawkins in 2022.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="274793" first="Peyton" last="Greathouse"], Artesia: Greathouse established himself as one of the top young wide receivers in the state as he helped Artesia reach the Class 5A state championship game. He’ll be the Bulldogs’ No. 1 receiving threat in 2022. Artesia must find a new QB and RB, but they always seem to find somebody.
3. [player_tooltip player_id="274724" first="Mateo" last="Contreras"], Robertson: Not only did Robertson have one of the best overall players in Class 3A this past season ([player_tooltip player_id="26261" first="Matthew" last="Gonzales"]), but they had one of the top receivers as well. Contreras was Gonzales’s favorite target all season, finishing with 40 receptions for 636 yards and 5 TD. Most importantly, Contreras came up big in the playoffs, catching three TD passes in the semifinal win over Socorro.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="274792" first="Marcus" last="Wilson"], Cibola: Not only is Wilson one of the top high school hoopers in the state (he;s already been offered by Washington State), but he’s a heckuva wide receiver on the gridiron as well. Wilson had 28 receptions for 408 yards and 9 TD in 2021. Together, Wilson, [player_tooltip player_id="269529" first="Branden" last="Castillo"] and [player_tooltip player_id="137935" first="Brayden" last="Mummert"] will form a dynamic pass catching trio for superb QB [player_tooltip player_id="137861" first="Aden" last="Chavez"] in 2022. Watch out for the Cougars.
5. [player_tooltip player_id="274788" first="Ashton" last="Thompson"], Eunice: Because Eunice is in Class 2A and located in the far southeastern corner of the state, the Cardinals don’t get a lot of love and neither does Thompson. But he’s one of the best young receivers in the state and will look to build on a 2021 season that saw him catch a team-leading 32 passes for 717 yards and 12 TD.
6. [player_tooltip player_id="275074" first="Bishop" last="Ortega"], Cleveland: Will Ortega be the next great receiver at Cleveland? With the Storm losing several reliable senior receivers, Ortega must step up and support [player_tooltip player_id="139523" first="Nic" last="Trujillo"] in 2022. Watching him run crisp routes and catch passes for the New Mexico Legacy 7x7 team, he’s got the size and skills to become a top-notch WR.
7. [player_tooltip player_id="274790" first="Jackson" last="Hix"], La Cueva: Hix wasn’t just a little-used sophomore in 2021. He was a major contributor to La Cueva’s passing attack, finishing with 27 receptions for 489 yards and 4 TD. The new ‘Fantastic Four’ might reside at La Cueva in 2022 with [player_tooltip player_id="208744" first="Exodus" last="Ayers"], [player_tooltip player_id="270020" first="Ian" last="Sanchez"], [player_tooltip player_id="274718" first="Cruz" last="Markham"] and Hix. Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="137862" first="Aidan" last="Armenta"] will have plenty of targets to throw the football.
8. [player_tooltip player_id="274705" first="Marquise" last="Renfro"], Atrisco Heritage: Renfroe was one of the few bright spots in an otherwise challenging season for Atrisco Heritage with 20 receptions for 303 yards. The good news for the Jaguars is they have some young talent to build around, including QB [player_tooltip player_id="275207" first="Dean" last="Marquez"], WR Latavious Morris, RB and Renfro. Future is bright for all three players.
9. [player_tooltip player_id="274718" first="Cruz" last="Markham"], La Cueva: We mentioned Markham above. Markham gained some valuable experience in 20921 and now is ready to become a major contributor to the Bears offense. La Cueva has the quarterback, several excellent receivers and an elite running back ([player_tooltip player_id="269525" first="Gabriel" last="Buie"]). The Bears will score plenty of points in 2022.
10. [player_tooltip player_id="275436" first="Josiah" last="Mitchell"], Eldorado: Mitchell was part of a balanced Eldorado passing attack in 221 that saw six receivers catch between 11 and 17 passes. The ascension of QB [player_tooltip player_id="275430" first="Brandon" last="Olivas"] to the full-time starting job and the graduation of workhorse running back [player_tooltip player_id="198231" first="Aidan" last="St. John"] could translate into the Eagles throwing the ball more in 2022.
