Coach Ramar Watson from St. Pius X filled 16 of the 20 available spots following Saturday’s tryout in Albuquerque. The current roster, which consists mainly of 2023 and 2024 prospects, is led by La Cueva quarterback Aidan Armenta Aidan Armenta 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2023 State NM and exciting wide receiver Exodus Ayers Exodus Ayers 6'2" | 175 lbs | ATH Proctor Academy | 2024 State New E , both highly regarded 2023 prospects.
Last season Armenta threw for 2,696 yards (3rd highest in the state) and 28 TD (4th most in state) in leading the Bears to the semifinals of the Class 6A playoffs. Ayers, meanwhile, stepped off the basketball court, where he’s a star, to play varsity football for the first time and caught 41 passes for 901 yards and 15 TD in just 8 games. He missed four games due to injury.
The other two quarterbacks are 2024 prospects: Noah Nelson from Rio Rancho and Jason Ussery from Los Lunas. Four more receivers besides Ayers made the roster: Bishop Ortega (2024) and Andres Armijo (2023) from Cleveland, West Mesa WR Chris Johnson Chris Johnson 5'9" | 135 lbs | WR West Mesa | 2023 State NM II (2023) and James Lockhart (2024) of Volcano Vista.
The lone running back currently on the roster is Andres Aguirre (2024) from Albuquerque High.
Defensively, two linebackers are on the roster: Dominic Valencia (2024) from Rio Rancho and Joseph Saavedra (2023) of AHS.
Five defensive backs are included on the current roster: Jackson Cherry (La Cueva, 2024), Tavon Archibald (West Mesa, 2024), Chris Loera (2023, Los Lunas), Jabulani Cooper (2023, Albuquerque) and David Mapalo (2022, Sandia).
Watson told Prep Redzone New Mexico that he wants to use the remaining four roster spots primarily to add depth to the defense.
