As we close out the first month of the new year, we take a look at five prospects that have earned consideration to be new additions. They may not be well known right now, but they’re poised to make some noise during the ‘22 season.
Nick Ruth – Newton, 6’5”, 240, OL
Up first is an offensive lineman that could start turning some heads during his junior campaign. Ruth managed to put together some impressive film during his first season starting varsity. His background on the hardwood has helped with his footwork, and he displays solid hand placement. He may appear a little lanky right now, but he has time to add size and fill in that frame. Ruth has the potential to be an All-League caliber player this year.
Matthew Magette – Eudora, 6’0”, 170, ATH
The Eudora Cardinals quietly continue to produce talented athletes that can contribute at multiple positions. Magette was an underclassman that played well for them at outside linebacker this past season, and with Eudora graduating some key pieces this spring, he has the opportunity to become an important two-way player for them this fall. The Cardinals’ coaching staff is sure to utilize Magette’s 4.5 40-speed and 40-inch vertical during the ‘22 season.
Jack Baird – Bishop Miege, 5’7”, 145, DB
Being an undersized corner and starting in your first varsity season against some of the top talent in the state can be challenging. But Baird didn’t let that stop him from making plays during the ‘21 season. He did a great job of flipping his hips and would be stride for stride with the opposition. Baird also did a good job of getting his head turned around which would lead to multiple pass breakups. The sophomore was impressive during the ‘21 season and he’ll be a key returning starter for the Stags this year.
Weston Langvardt – Chapman, 6’3”, 255, OL
Ruth isn’t the only offensive lineman to keep an eye on during the ‘22 season. Langvardt started every game this past season and was a part of an offensive line that helped produce over 3,400 yards on the ground. He presents a nice frame for a sophomore and has the versatility to play multiple positions along the offensive line. Langvardt also has some athleticism to his game, which stems from his multi-sport background. Expect to see Langvardt take a his game to another level during the ‘22 season.
Jack Bloom – Seaman, 6’0”, 175, RB
Bloom is another prospect that will have the opportunity to become a key contributor this year, as the Vikings graduate a strong senior class. The sophomore had a limited role this past season, but he did manage to score four touchdowns in Seaman’s two playoff games. While that is a small sample size, it is an encouraging sign for him moving forward. It’s fair to say he’s earned the trust of the coaching staff, which should lead to an expanded role his junior year.
