Over 150 prospects showed out at the first CA PRZ Showcase at Santa Margarita Catholic this past Sunday. The event was filled with high level talent and competition at all positions with college scouts and coaches in attendance. Here is a breakdown of the defensive standouts according to me. Keep an eye out for Top Performers, Positional Breakdowns, and more event coverage throughout the week from other PRZ Scouts. Here is a link to the positional MVPs as voted by PRZ scouts and coaches.
DEFENSIVE BACKS
[player_tooltip player_id="270928" first="Carsten" last="Mamaril"], 2022, Chaparral
He was named the MVP of the showcase for the defensive backs. He had solid numbers in the speed and agility drills with a 4.60 40 time, 4.37 shuttle and 8'10" broad jump. He impressed me the most in the 1on1 matchups with the top receivers. Mamaril constantly won those matchups and at the end of the day when the showcase had the best players match up with each other, Mamaril got a pick six. He had five interceptions for Chaparral this season and has an offer from Whittier College.

[player_tooltip player_id="198341" first="Jordan" last="Tolmaire White"], 2022, Chaminade
White was a late arrival and did not stretch enough which effected his speed numbers, but he improved as the day went on. He looked great in the individual drills and uses his length well in pass coverage. His agility is solid and he covered the top receivers well. He did not arrive on time to be measured but he is every bit of 6-foot-2 but I am doubting the 185 pounds he is listed as. He managed to have a 9'3" broad jump despite the lack of stretching and he does have track level speed. White has an offer from Monmouth.

[player_tooltip player_id="168733" first="Brad" last="Gerken"], 2023, San Clemente
Gerken was one of the most vocal and upbeat guys at the showcase. His 8'10" broad jump was one of the better numbers of the day and he looked great covering receivers in the 1on1 portion of the day. He was laying out, diving for balls and left with tons of scrapes on his elbows. He is physical at the point of attack and looked as good as anyone despite the drills being designed more for corners than safeties.

[player_tooltip player_id="115475" first="Hasani" last="Scott"], 2024, Los Alamitos
Scott was mentioned when discussing the positional MVPs for the day. He ran a 4.6 40 and had a 9'1" broad jump. He transitions smoothly out of his back pedal to stay next to the receivers on deep balls and breaks to the ball quickly on underneath routes. He could start at most schools in the area but is fighting for playing time on a loaded Los Alamitos secondary. I am excited to see how his junior season goes.

[player_tooltip player_id="270905" first="Treyvon" last="Tolmaire"], 2024, Mission Viejo
Tolmaire showed great ball skills as a sophomore for the Diablos this season and those skills were on display Sunday. He moves flawlessly from his back pedal when covering deep balls and high points the ball like a good receiver. He is physical without drawing penalties and plays taller than his 5-foot-10 frame. He ran a 4.31 in the shuttle and had the best mark of the day in the broad jump at 10'. He won his 1on1 matchup at the end of the day during the best on best period.
[player_tooltip player_id="216420" first="Michael" last="Sutton-Shy"], 2022, Western
Sutton-Shy was one of the better class of 2022 players at the event and he got some reps in on both sides of the ball. His speed numbers were not the best but he did not show a lack of speed in the individual drills and 1on1 matchups. He got open as a receiver and as a defensive back he tracks the ball well and could stay in the hip pocket of receivers. He lost his 1on1 matchup during the best on best period, but he faced the guy who won the receiver MVP award and did well against the other good receivers. He has an offer from Missouri S&T and would be a late steal for a Division 3 or NAIA program.

LINEBACKERS
[player_tooltip player_id="270906" first="Samarai" last="Anderson"], 2023, Centennial
Anderson was named the MVP for the linebackers and honestly if we had picked an overall MVP of the day, he was on the short list. I knew he was a good run stopper by watching his film but his ability to cover good running backs in pass coverage was impressive. He had a 9'7" broad jump which is impressive for a guy over 200 pounds and while he didn't blow anybody away in the speed drills, he was able to hang with everyone in the individual drills. He is a real Power 5 talent.

[player_tooltip player_id="270026" first="Wyatt" last="Mosier"], 2023, Yorba Linda
He was the second biggest linebacker at 213.4 pounds and he moves well for his size. Running backs could not get separation on him in 1on1 pass coverage drills and he gets physical without crossing the line and drawing penalties. He is one of the best tacklers in Orange County and if he works on his speed and agility, he could really impress scouts later in the offseason and during his senior year.

Robert Trey Valles, 2023, Camarillo
He was not the biggest linebacker at the event and I didn't get a chance to see a lot of him during the individual drills, but his agility numbers jumped out at me. He ran a 4.22 shuttle which was the fastest for any linebacker, a 7.28 L drill which was the second fastest and had a 9'4" broad jump which was the second best for a linebacker. He had 83 tackles and five sacks this season and could definitely play at the Division 3 or NAIA level.

DEFENSIVE LINE
[player_tooltip player_id="270929" first="Nicholas" last="Johnson"], 2023, Santa Margarita
Johnson was the defensive line MVP of the showcase and he got a ringing endorsement from Ohio State signee [player_tooltip player_id="141878" first="Hero" last="Kanu"]. He is 6-foot-4, 180 pounds and while his speed and agility numbers were not off the charts, the only thing missing from his game is mass. He is very fast off the edge as a pass rusher, has excellent foot work and good hand skills. He had to line up as a 3-technique in 1on1 pass protection drills and even though he lost his matchup due to being out of position, he held his own against one of the best offensive linemen. He is working with Saddleback Strength so the mass and strength will come and he will be one to watch this fall.

[player_tooltip player_id="147760" first="Noa" last="Siaosi"], 2024, Vacaville Christian
Some of the defensive line coaches also mentioned Siaosi when debating positional MVPs. He was very good in the speed drills with a 4.60 shuttle which was the second best among the defensive linemen. He has good power rushing moves for someone who is only 219 pounds. He had 12.5 sacks as a sophomore last season for a good Vacaville Christian team that plays at a lower level. He did well against good offensive linemen Sunday. He has good hands and quickness off the edge and should get some offers after a productive offseason.

[player_tooltip player_id="270888" first="Owen" last="Burnside"], 2023, Tesoro
Burnside is a defensive end right now but will likely be recruited as an outside linebacker. He had the second best shuttle time of anyone in the showcase, including receivers and running backs at 4.12. He also had a 9'3" broad jump and 4.65 40 time which was one of the better times of the day. Burnside is fast off the edge and has good hip movement mixed with hand fighting which makes him an excellent pass rusher. He had 8.5 sacks as a junior last season but I am curious to see how he could play as an outside linebacker because he has the speed and agility to excel in pass coverage with some work.
