Talent begets talent.
And just like college recruiters who are tipped off on one prospect after going to see another, we’ve visited enough schools and watched to enough film to see that player rankings can do the same.
In total, 10 schools placed at least five players in the Prep Red Zone South Carolina class of 2022 rankings. They had stars and key role players alike.
But we noticed all of them.
CHAPMAN/NORTHWESTERN (9)
Northwestern’s [player_tooltip player_id="259967" first="Jecari" last="Bryson"], [player_tooltip player_id="259971" first="Will" last="Monroe"] and [player_tooltip player_id="130093" first="Isaac" last="McLellan"] boosted the Trojans into a tie for the top spot after Chapman stood alone the last time around. They joined teammates [player_tooltip player_id="89316" first="Will" last="Mattison"], [player_tooltip player_id="89311" first="Tay" last="McCroey"], [player_tooltip player_id="91200" first="Calique" last="Cunningham"], [player_tooltip player_id="89310" first="Kanoah" last="Vinesett"], [player_tooltip player_id="89332" first="Christian" last="Watkins"] and [player_tooltip player_id="200747" first="Austin" last="Wilkes"] to get there.
Chapman and its high-powered offense helped keep its stockpile strong. There were four offensive linemen in [player_tooltip player_id="153252" first="Dylan" last="Fortner"], [player_tooltip player_id="153831" first="Dylan" last="Moody"], Nic Cox and [player_tooltip player_id="153251" first="Sam" last="Maloa"]. Receivers [player_tooltip player_id="153245" first="DJ" last="Black"] (who jumped 93 spots), [player_tooltip player_id="153247" first="Tim" last="McClurkin"] and [player_tooltip player_id="153242" first="Walt" last="Waddell"], quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="153248" first="Drew" last="Settle"] and kicker [player_tooltip player_id="153249" first="Ricky" last="Montalvo"] all ensured the Panthers stayed on their lofty perch - even if they now share it.
OCEANSIDE COLLEGIATE (8)
The collection of talent in Mount Pleasant is unmistakable. Oceanside placed seniors all over the field all over the PRZ rankings. Offensive linemen [player_tooltip player_id="59486" first="Jacob" last="Ashley"] and [player_tooltip player_id="61077" first="Will" last="Gause"], defensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="59472" first="James" last="Deveaux"], linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="89324" first="Carson" last="Arnold"], defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="59501" first="Roan" last="Shawver"], kicker [player_tooltip player_id="89328" first="Spencer" last="McKinley"], quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="91220" first="Colby" last="Shirey"] and defensive back and return man [player_tooltip player_id="153224" first="Rico" last="Harrell"] are all likely going to have opportunities at the next level.
SPRING VALLEY/GREENVILLE/NORTH MYRTLE BEACH/SOUTH POINTE (7)
It’s easy to see why each of the schools has a quarterback in the rankings. Spring Valley’s [player_tooltip player_id="59480" first="DeQuandre" last="Smith"], Greenville’s [player_tooltip player_id="102962" first="Prometheus" last="Franklin II"], North Myrtle Beach’s [player_tooltip player_id="91207" first="Cameron" last="Freeman"] and South Pointe’s [player_tooltip player_id="200727" first="Zay" last="McCrorey"] showed brilliance time and again throughout the last two seasons. South Pointe added to more players to the mix time time around with receiver [player_tooltip player_id="259963" first="Waymond" last="Jenerette"] and defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="259983" first="Chris" last="McCullough"]. The state championship gave us plenty of time to evaluate live.
RIDGE VIEW/FORT DORCHESTER (6)
From offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="153246" first="Tray" last="Franklin"], quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="153263" first="Andre" last="Washington"], linebackers [player_tooltip player_id="91193" first="Miquel" last="Mason"] and [player_tooltip player_id="91229" first="Sterling" last="Goodwin"], receiver [player_tooltip player_id="92205" first="Chase" last="Smith"] and newly added lineman [player_tooltip player_id="259973" first="Tim" last="Speaks"], it was easy to see why Ridge View impressed again.
Meanwhile, Fort Dorchester was loaded and made a nice run of its own in 2022. Touchstone Energy Cooperatives Bowl selections [player_tooltip player_id="89318" first="Demetrius" last="Watson"] and [player_tooltip player_id="89313" first="Devin" last="Geddis"], receivers [player_tooltip player_id="200666" first="Davion" last="Joyner"], [player_tooltip player_id="200692" first="Demetris" last="McKelvey"] and [player_tooltip player_id="200705" first="Marion" last="Mitchell"] and center [player_tooltip player_id="200694" first="Max" last="Garrido"] were crucial parts of the Patriots’ puzzle.
MYRTLE BEACH (5)
We’ve written about [player_tooltip player_id="59464" first="Adam" last="Randall"] and [player_tooltip player_id="59494" first="Ryan" last="Burger"] a ton. The Clemson and Appalachian State signees were deserving, of course. What got lost in the shuffle some was 6-foot-6 offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="183415" first="Mac" last="Walters"] and a pair of defensive linemen in [player_tooltip player_id="153241" first="Tre" last="Phillips"] and [player_tooltip player_id="259989" first="Dalton" last="Epps"]. The latter was a recent addition to the Prep Red Zone rankings after a strong senior season in which he recorded 12.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a pair of fumble recoveries.
