South Pointe led at halftime 28-0 and never looked back as most of this game story was written at halftime. Coach DeVonte Holloman’s squad was emphatic in all three phases on Thursday night as they dominated Beaufort, 41-7 to secure their first state championship since 2017 and their seventh in program history.
Let’s get into notes and standout performances from the contest:
South Pointe

Senior QB [player_tooltip player_id="200727" first="Zay" last="McCrorey"] made plays with his feet and showed his elusiveness throughout the evening, which included a 30-yard gain in the second quarter. He showed off his arm as well, throwing it on a rope to Waymond Jenerette for a 34-yard completion beating man to man coverage. McCrorey had two rushing touchdowns on the night.

"I think I played great. I think it was my best game ever. It felt like I wasn’t even on the field because it’s our first championship." - McCrorey on state title win

Senior WR Waymond Jenerette came in at quarterback for one play and connected with Armendiz Huskey for a short touchdown to put South Pointe up 28-0 at the halftime break. He was involved in the quick passing game early on. But Jenerette’s highlight of the night came when he made a juggling catch, showing incredible concentration as he bobbled it multiple times before making the catch in the third quarter.

Junior RBs Ja’Quan Thompson and RB Caleb Sims – Sims and Thompson both followed up on strong performances from last week against Greenville, running hard in between the tackles and scoring touchdowns in the first quarter. The first came from Sims with 8:29 left to make it 7-0. Thompson scored with 4:08 left to make it 14-0.

Junior WR Demari Kendrick came up huge on the biggest stage as he connected with McCrorey for the first big play of the night on a go route, which led to a touchdown. He ran his routes with precision, especially the cross country ones, including a 68-yard completion in the third.

DL Tenarrious Rhinehart harassed Beaufort QB [player_tooltip player_id="89319" first="Tyler" last="Haley"] throughout the night, and brought pressure on third down. DB DJ Barksdale stayed stride for stride with his man and made an incredible interception in the second quarter. He also notched another interception in the fourth quarter when the game was well in hand. Syracuse commit [player_tooltip player_id="59487" first="Quan" last="Peterson"] also picked off Haley in the third quarter when Beaufort was threatening to score, making a play in traffic.

"Defense played great. They’ve been playing great and we’ve been stingy on defense all season. For us to come out and put this performance (up) and really wanted the shutout but we’ll take the W always," South Pointe coach DeVonte Holloman on the defensive performance

Beaufort

Caleb Ulmer scored Beaufort’s only points of the night on an inside run play with 1:32 to play in the contest. He also came up with a nice fourth down conversion on the swing pass out of the backfield in the third quarter. RB Amarie Morris made one of the few highlight plays of the night for the Eagles with an outside zone run for a first down on 3rd down.

[player_tooltip player_id="91356" first="Daryl" last="DePass"] nearly had an INT on the goal line where he stepped in front of the throw at the right time. Carter Bowersox’s near interception came off a tip where [player_tooltip player_id="200727" first="Zay" last="McCrorey"] was hit as he threw, all in the second quarter.

Additional notes

Beaufort’s Aaron Lamb made an impressive tackle for loss where he shot the gap where the run was supposed to go on third down.

South Pointe’s [player_tooltip player_id="146375" first="Jonathan" last="Williams"] also had a fumble recovery in the third quarter.
