Part 2 of our deep dive into the state's passing yard leaders of the 2021 season. [player_tooltip player_id="87427" first="Gabe" last="Downing"], 2023, Olympia Downing showed great year over year improvement in all categories as a junior throwing for nearly 2,381 yards and 30 touchdowns. Flashed a quick and compact release at the short and intermediate levels with the ability to drive off his back foot and fit the ball in a tight window with good velocity and placement. Also can attack the defense vertically with good touch and trajectory on his deep ball to allow receivers to run underneath. He sees the field and coverage well with the ability to process information quickly and work through his progression. He's a functional athlete that can sit back in the pocket and throw it 40 times a game but also shows he can escape pressure and make plays with his legs when he needs too. Expect him to be among the state's passing yard leaders again as a senior. https://twitter.com/DowningGabe/status/1457178310887165955?s=20 Kevin Wulff, 2022, Eatonville Wulff led his team to his team to the 1A state championship through the air and on the ground. Passed for 2,365 yards and 25 touchdowns with a 143 QBR while running for 550 yards and nine more scores. Strong and well-built frame at 6'2” 215 lbs. with the versatility and athleticism to take over a game and be a difference maker from all over the field. Flashes a strong and accurate arm that excels throwing the deep ball with touch. Demonstrates good composure and patience in the pocket as he scans the field and allows the play to develop. Love the way he's able to stand tall in the pocket with a strong balanced platform under pressure to deliver an accurate ball. As a ball carrier, he's tough to tackle once he gets going downhill. His skillset could transition well to multiple positions at the college level. https://twitter.com/KevinWulff8/status/1468401003997270016?s=20 Kade Bomberger, 2023, Goldendale The dual sport athlete (football/basketball) threw for 2,331 yards and 28 touchdowns as a junior, highlighted by a 76-56 victory over Mabton where he threw for over 400 yards and six touchdowns. He showed a good ability to create and improvise throughout the year and possesses good length and size to build on at 6'2”. Led Goldendale to an 8-1 season before a tough loss to Forks in the 2B playoffs. [player_tooltip player_id="115343" first="Jake" last="Schakel"], 2024, Emerald Ridge Schakel is already one of the state's top passers as a sophomore throwing for 2,250 yards and 23 touchdowns while completing 73% of his throws. He checks a lot of boxes in terms of physical skillset for the D1 level with his combination of strong mechanics and natural arm talent. He's a technician in the pocket that is very precise and efficient with his movement and delivery. Good ability to hit his spots and make strong throws with velocity at all three depths. Flashes the timing and anticipation to hit his receivers in stride and allow them to run after the catch. He's a dual sport athlete (football/basketball) that picked up offers from Nevada and Florida Atlantic prior to the start of the 2021 season. https://twitter.com/Jake_Schakel14/status/1458938568571645967?s=20 [player_tooltip player_id="87404" first="Gabarri" last="Johnson"], 2023, Lincoln Johnson showed why he is one of the top 2023 dual-threat QB's in the nation with a strong junior season throwing for 2,400 yards and 30 touchdowns and running for another 650 yards and 14 touchdowns in just nine games. The game/position come naturally to him with his athleticism, arm talent, and high football IQ. Possesses a quick and fluid throwing motion that can mix up velocities and throw from different arm angles to deliver an accurate and catchable ball. His awareness, pocket mobility, and balance allow him to extend the play with his legs and be extremely accurate and efficient throwing on the run. Holds seven major D1 offers from Oregon, Utah, Arkansas, Oregon State, ASU, Washington State, and FAU with the expectation that he will continue to rise up rankings and recruiting boards. https://twitter.com/GabarriJohnson5/status/1467194626322808838?s=20 [player_tooltip player_id="87368" first="Joshua" last="Wood"], 2022, Graham-Kapowsin The Washington Gatorade Player of the Year led his team to an undefeated season and a state championship while throwing for 2,222 yards and 31 touchdowns adding 535 yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground. He's a smooth and versatile athlete with a compact and easy throwing motion. He's able to throw his receivers open getting the ball out quick, on time, and accurately with just a flick of the wrist. He's smart with the football and understands coverage to look defenders off without taking unnecessary risk, threw only five interceptions on 212 attempts on the season. The 6'3” 195 lb. QB committed to Eastern Washington over offers from Idaho State and Portland State. https://twitter.com/Joshuawood02/status/1446181582176325648?s=20
Follow Jordan Reyes and Prep Redzone WA for more PRZ content and news for Washington High School Football. Want to be ranked?
