For the second straight year, Holland Hall and Lincoln Christian met for the Class 3A state championship. And for the second straight year, Holland Hall captured the state championship. The Dutch were led by their senior class, especially on the defensive side of the ball as they kept Lincoln Christian one-dimensional and came up with an interception as Lincoln Christian tried one more last minute drive. And it was fitting that senior [player_tooltip player_id="61135" first="Ethan" last="Roush"], arguably the team’s MVP during the playoff run, came up with the interception with just over ten seconds to seal the win.
The Dutch got the scoring going and really established how this game was going to be played on their first possession. On their first drive, they went 15 plays and chewed up over seven minutes and took a 3-0 lead on the Magnus Lepak field goal from 32 yards out. Lincoln would then go on a lengthy drive that ended in a field goal that was wide left.
Things would pick up in the second quarter as the Dutch would roll down the field and [player_tooltip player_id="61135" first="Ethan" last="Roush"] found Hunt Heldebrand on a 25-yard touchdown on a fourth down play with 7:55 left in the second quarter. Heldebrand made a fantastic one-handed grab to put the Dutch up 10-0. While Holland Hall contained Lincoln Christian’s passing game, they could not hold Lincoln Christian quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="52787" first="Max" last="Brown"] out of the end zone on the ground game. Brown got loose for a 43-yard touchdown, his 20th rushing touchdown of the season and Lincoln pulled within 10-7.
But the Dutch would respond and put more points up before halftime. The Dutch would get a big play from senior running back [player_tooltip player_id="38774" first="Zane" last="Woodham"], who was limited in the second half with an ankle injury, and then Holland Hall would run the old "Philly Special" to score with 2:55 left in the second quarter. Roush took the snap and handed off to Woodham, who flipped it back to [player_tooltip player_id="61125" first="NuNu" last="Campbell"] who hit Roush all alone in the end zone. Roush would return the favor with Campbell in the second half as he found the Tulsa commit in the end zone for a 16-yard touchdown to put the Dutch up 24-10.
Lincoln Christian would score with a little over five minutes left on a short [player_tooltip player_id="155258" first="Easton" last="Rogers"] run. The Bulldogs would need to get a stop and they got it and had a chance to tie the game. However, Brown would throw an interception to Roush in the end zone and the Dutch would capture their second straight title.
Roush finished 8-11 for 123 yards and two touchdowns with another 86 yards on 13 carries. And as if that wasn’t enough, Roush was also the leading tackler along with [player_tooltip player_id="38787" first="Parker" last="Jenney"] with ten tackles. [player_tooltip player_id="38774" first="Zane" last="Woodham"] finished with 131 yards on 16 carries and seven tackles but was very limited in the second half. The Holland Hall defense held [player_tooltip player_id="52787" first="Max" last="Brown"] to 5-15 for 87 yards but he would carry the load on offense with 28 carries for 176 yards and a touchdown.
Holland Hall’s defense last year was incredibly special and coming into this season, odds were that they would not be as dominant as what we saw in 2020. But it was the defense that came up huge down the stretch during this playoff run and once again in the state championship game.
