The 7-A West can be a difficult conference every year in the state of Arkansas. The 2021 season made that clear especially in the case of the Southside Mavericks. The Mavericks finished the 2021 season with a 2-9 record. However, the Mavericks were able to punch a ticket to the playoffs before losing a tough matchup up to North Little Rock. We are going to take a look at some of the key players of the 2021 season as well as give a look ahead to the 2022 season.
The offensive side of the ball is that unit that always seems to get the attention from folks, so we will start on that side of the ball. Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="135307" first="David" last="Sorg"] will have the chance to be the signal caller for the Mavericks again in 2022. Sorg threw for 2,774 yards, 26 touchdowns, and only 13 interceptions on the season. He has the potential to have an impressive 2022 season as well and look out for him during the baseball season as well in the spring.
From a rushing perspective the Mavericks had several running backs see plenty of carries in 2021. Sophomore running back [player_tooltip player_id="257649" first="Amari" last="Tucker"] was impressive on the ground this season for Fort Smith Southside. Tucker racked up 505 yards rushing, 349 yards receiving, and a total of nine touchdowns for the Mavericks. [player_tooltip player_id="257682" first="Isaac" last="Gregory"] will have an opportunity to see some carries next season as well. Gregory amassed 184 yards on the ground and punched the ball in the end zone one time for the Mavericks. Plenty of talent exists in the offensive backfield for Fort Smith Southside.
Meanwhile, the receiving corps for the Mavericks is going to see plenty of new prospects earn a chance to see the field in 2022. The Mavericks will likely split Tucker out at the wide receiver spot as well as throwing some passes to Gregory. Amere Dingle will be in the mix to see some passes thrown his way next season. Losing senior tight end [player_tooltip player_id="135265" first="Dmitri" last="Lloyd"] is going to be a tough prospect to replace. However, the passing game should be in good hands next season for the Mavericks.
On the defensive side of the ball, the Mavericks have several players to keep an eye on in 2022. [player_tooltip player_id="257681" first="Devin" last="Huggins"] racked up 66 tackles this season, playing several different positions for the Mavericks. AJ Williams spent time at the cornerback and free safeties spots and was in on 49 tackles in 2021. The Mavericks defense has guys that make plays on the ball in the forms of Williams and Huggins. The Southside defense has the potential to be a unit that is much improved next season.
