Continue ReadingIt was a close 28-17 Salpointe Catholic win over Desert Edge down in Tucson on Friday night. Although the two big name QB’s in the state did well, it was the underrated RB’s from each team that stepped up and had the biggest impact for both offenses. Take a look:
Anthony Wilhite Anthony Wilhite 5'10" | 175 lbs | RB Salpointe Catholic | 2022 State AZ , RB, Salpointe Catholic ’22
Wilhite was the difference maker throughout this matchup, rushing for 146 yards and a TD on 31 carries, and also caught a TD from 9 yards out. He sizes up with a 5’10″ 180lb frame and possesses natural athleticism across the board making him a dynamic player that can fit in a variety of schemes. Workhorse ability with good vision and change of direction and can make his money both between the tackles or along the outsides. He’s been one of the top performers in all levels throughout the playoffs, and should draw some late attention here soon.
Christopher Cordero, RB, Desert Edge ’23
Cordero is going to be a big name senior next year to remember. He totaled 22 carries for 138 yards and a TD which included a 55 yard burst up the gut on 4th and 1 for six. He displays a nice initial burst and accelerates through open lanes, and possesses good balance after contact to bounce or spin off non-wrapping tacklers. Good top end speed in space to finish big runs and proved he holds big play ability. He flashes both twitch and physicality depending on the scenario, and is developing into a dangerous player in that Desert Edge backfield.
Dylan Dreis, ATH, Salpointe Catholic ’22
As I stated earlier in the week, Dreis came into the game as a sneaky mismatch, and was able to put on an impressive performance and play a significant role in numerous Salpointe drives. He snagged 2 catches for 56 yards and a TD on the last play of the game. On his first catch on a vert that went for about 30 yards, he showed the ability to generate a clean release, use physicality with a slight bend and chop to get over the top of the CB, got himself stacked and utilized body control to adjust and make an impressive grab. At 6’5″ 195lbs, Dreis posseses a solid frame and build with a large catch radius and is easily one of the most underrated athletes in the state, as he has the talent to play X, Z, or QB at the next level.
Treyson Bourguet Treyson Bourguet 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Salpointe Catholic | 2022 State AZ , QB, Salpointe Catholic ’22
Bourguet showcased his dual threat ability on Friday night, rushing for 72 yards and a TD on 11 carries. HE also went 6/8 passing for 128 yards and 2 TD’s. He threw the deep ball with good timing, touch, and placement to put it in only the receivers radius. He did a good job with his pre-snap read to spot matchps and soft spots given the pre-snap coverage shells, and did a great job with ball security to avoid poor decisions and eliminate turnovers.
Adryan Lara Adryan Lara 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Desert Edge | 2022 State AZ , QB, Desert Edge ’22
Lara had a quiet night for him, but was still able to flash intangibles and impress. He went 16/29 for 135 yards with a TD and an INT. Lara possesses good arm strength to stretch the field vertically and did a great job throwing with touch to throw receivers open. He flashed the ability to extend plays when the pocket collapses and sees the whole field well.
