But the drama was far from finished in the Class 3A state championship game. Much of it was just beginning.
Top-seeded Sterlington marched 74 yards during the next four-plus minutes to reach the opposite end zone — a 21-yard run by J’Keldric Miller — and came up with one final stop as the run-heavy Farmers struggled to move quickly enough in the final minute.
The Panthers closed out the 26-24 victory and perfect 15-0 season for their second title in six years.
Here were several of the top performers:
STERLINGTON
Caleb Andrews (2022)
5-10, 255 DL
The senior leader up front finished second on the team with six tackles, including help blow up a fourth-down play in the third quarter with his Panthers trailing by three points.
Trammel Colvin (2024)
5-9, 175 RB
The youngster in Sterlington’s stable of running backs showed some dynamic flashes with eight carries for 32 yards, including three of his longest in the second half to help set up the team’s two final scores.
Jacob Green (2022)
6-0, 200 K
Few, if any, kickers had likely earned their team’s Outstanding Player honors in Louisiana high school state championship games entering the weekend. But Green’s 40- and 46-yard field goals were clear impact plays against an opponent without a kicking game. He also booed six kickoffs an average of 55.7 yards — nearly 20 yards longer than his counterpart.
Bryce Lark (2022)
5-9, 205 RB
The senior was a workhorse in the Panthers’ deep backfield with 18 tough carried for 87 yards, including the bulk of the key short-yardage conversions, a spinning 5-yard touchdown and one longer 18-yard gain.
Mason Lawhon (2023)
5-9, 165 QB
The quarterback put Sterlington on the board first with a 26-yard dart up the middle of the field to the end zone. Lawhon finished with five carries for 33 yards, two completions for 29 yards and a 21-yard reception.
J’Keldric Miller (2022)
5-7, 175 RB
The dash to the end zone for the go-ahead score was just the last of his 14 carries for a team-leading 106 yards. Miller was the team’s big-play runner with a 7.6-yard average.
UNION PARISH
Trey Holly Trey Holly 5'8" | 190 lbs | RB Union Parish | 2023 State LA (2023)
5-9, 185 RB
Simply put, the junior star was one of the most impressive players in any of the nine state championship games — if not the most impressive — even in his team’s losing effort. Holly rushed 24 times for 182 yards, including a 66-yard score on which he unleashed a magician’s hat full of great moves. He also caught two passes for 83 yards, including the 75-yard go-ahead bomb in the fourth quarter; completed two passes; and recorded seven hard-hitting tackles, including one for a 3-yard loss.
Cole Dison (2022)
5-11, 160 QB
The senior quarterback helped provide just enough balance to the Farmers’ run-dominant offense to burn Sterlington on a couple timely plays. Dison completed four of eight passes for 99 yards, including the 75-yard heave to Holly and a 14-yarder to Dorien Henderson.
Ja’Quarius Donald (2022)
5-10, 200 RB
Holly’s primary complement in the backfield the past two years finished his own high school career with 13 carries for 52 yards and a touchdown, a pair of catches for 9 yards and four kickoff returns for 100 yards.
Omari Montgomery (2022)
5-9, 205 LB
The senior linebacker joined Holly, junior linebacker Toriana Traylor Jr., senior end Matthew Blake Ramsey and freshman end Tyquereis Wilson with at least six tackles each and Holly, Traylor and Wilson with tackles for loss. Montgomery also caught a two-point conversion from Dison in the first quarter to help provide the Farmers their first lead.
