The seventh grade athletes in the Florida bracket of the FBU National Championship tournament came out to play last week. Here’s a look at the standouts from round one and two of the FBU National Championship tournament in the Florida bracket.
Round One
Kyle Brown – South Florida, Dillard Middle, Lauderhill – Number 3 has the size and ability of a future star on Saturday’s. Easily looking the part, Brown stood out with his natural running, fluid cuts, and length.
Jamar Meikle – South Florida, New Renaissance Middle, Miramar – Meikle reads the QB very well, making plays on the ball and receiver like a veteran. Number 9 for South Florida stood out among a very talented field on Saturday.
Cody Conness – South Florida, St Anthony, Fort Lauderdale – Number 3 for South Florida had a passing TD in the first half against Central Florida on Saturday. Looking every bit the part of a future star, Conness led his offense very well in the Semifinal Round.
Landen Holley – Central Florida, Homeschooled, Tarpon Springs – The home school product has the size and play style of a big time playmaker on the defensive side of the ball. Number 14 flew off the edge and disrupted the backfield with ease on Saturday.
Antwoine Glover – Central Florida, Chain of Lakes Middle School, Orlando – Glover had two tackles for loss in the first half against South Florida. Playing like a man possessed, number 13 dominated the competition and made it look easy.
Alexander Rossi – Central Florida, Meadowbrook, Orlando – The big receiver from Central Florida made a tough catch in the first half vs South Florida on Saturday. Tracking the ball between defenders, Rossi drew praise from the crowd as he hauled in the big catch. Number 16 definitely stood out.
Bryan Murimwa – Central Florida, Indian Trails Middle School, Winter Springs – Finding his way into the endzone, number 7 scored a rushing TD in the first half on Saturday vs South Florida. What looked like a wildcat package, the quarterback fooled the competition by putting his head down and picking up tough yards on his way to paydirt. Future offenses will be designed around his skill set. He also showed out on defense, picking up a sack and making another big hit.
Tommy Henderson – Central Florida, Ocoee Middle School, Ocoee – The Class of 2027 defensive back made his presence known on Saturday by laying the wood on the opposing offense. Roaming the backfield and making receivers keep their heads on a swivel, Henderson changed the game with his play. Wears number 22.
Troy Butler – Jacksonville, Fletcher Middle, Jacksonville – Playing running back for Jacksonville, number 32 stood out on Saturday with a big run. Breaking tackles and carrying defenders, it was not fair for the defense trying to take down Butler on Saturday.
Mason Thomas Mason Thomas DL Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons | 2022 FL – Jacksonville, Jefferson Davis, Jacksonville – It was easy to spot number 56 on Saturday, just look for the biggest player on the field. Dominating the trenches and playing like someone much older, the Class of 2027 has a future star in number 56.
Jaidan Delaune – Jacksonville, Lake Shore Middle School, Jacksonville – Playing quarterback for Jacksonville, number 11 scored a rushing TD in the 2nd half against Southwest Florida.
Kasir Jennings – Jacksonville, Duval Charter at Baymeadows, Green Cove Springs – The edge defender for Jacksonville made plays in the backfield, including a tackle for loss for number 4. Stood out with quickness, explosion, and tenacity.
King Boylston – Jacksonville, FLVS, Orange Park – Another dual threat at quarterback for Jacksonville was number 7, who also scored on a rushing TD in the 2nd half against Southwest Florida.
Chase Phillips – Jacksonville, Baker County Middle School, Macclenny – Loaded with talent, Number 5 had an onside kick recovery and a big run on offense.
Nolan Nelson – Jacksonville, Patriot Oaks Academy, St Johns – Number 81 for Jacksonville towered over his competition on Saturday. Looking much older, his frame is college ready right now.
Sergarion Gunsby – Jacksonville, Lake Weir Middle School, Orange Park – Number 6 scored a rushing TD on Saturday against Southwest Florida, weaving his way through the competition on his way to the endzone.
Willie Blanks III – Southwest Florida, Dunbar Middle School, Fort Myers – Number 3 for Southwest Florida showed out on Saturday, making plays on both sides of the ball. Whether it was breaking up passes on defense or catching touchdowns on offense, Blanks made a name for himself in the Semifinal Round against Jacksonville.
Derrick Baker – Southwest Florida, First Baptist Academy, Naples – The Class of 2027 quarterback looked like a future star on Saturday against Jacksonville, reaching the endzone twice through the air, once for a touchdown and once on a two point play.
Round Two
JaQillie Hobdy – Jacksonville, KIPP, Jacksonville – Number 9 for Jacksonville made plays all over the field on Sunday; rushing for a touchdown, catching a touchdown, and three pass breakups. Very fast and elusive in the open field, Hobdy stood out in a fantastic way in the Championship Game. His speed is his best attribute, moving across the field at another gear than the competition. He made defenders miss with ease, gliding across the field. His agility and explosiveness are outstanding, as well as his acceleration.
Nolan Nelson – Jacksonville, Patriot Oaks Academy, St Johns – Number 81 for Jacksonville secured a two point conversion catch on Sunday, high pointing a fade route and securing the rebound like power forward on the basketball court. His height is his best weapon at the moment, but his ball skills are not far behind. His frame is outstanding for a prospect at this stage in his development. His catch radius is outstanding and will only draw more and more attention from defenses and college coaches alike. He will be a focal point in his future offensive schemes. Whether through catches, targets, or being a decoy to open up his teammates, Nelson is a name to know.
Jaidan Delaune – Jacksonville, Lake Shore Middle School, Jacksonville – Number 11 for Jacksonville passed for two touchdowns and converted a two point play through the air on Sunday. Playing with poise and a killer instinct, Delaune would not be denied as he led his team to a Championship victory on Sunday. The young leader played like a veteran. Displaying poise and confidence, it was no wonder that his coaches trusted him to make the right plays with the game on the line. He is a dual threat behind center, making several plays with his legs as well as his arm.
Mario Pratt III – Jacksonville, Duval Virtual Instructional Academy, Jacksonville – Number 18 for Jacksonville snagged an interception on the defensive side of the ball on Sunday. Making the most of his opportunity, Pratt made sure to change the momentum with his play. He read the quarterback’s eyes and broke on the ball well, showing his playmaking ability. This defensive back will only continue to make plays in the future.
Ty Froehlich – Jacksonville, Palm Valley Academy, Ponte Vedra – Number 32 for Jacksonville was a problem for the opposing offense on Sunday, making plays in the backfield including a tackle for loss. With a long frame, Froehlich looks the part of a big time recruit in the future. Built like someone a few years older, he will have defensive coaches salivating when coming up with schemes that showcase his abilities. His size and strength at this stage of his development separate him from his peers.
Chase Phillips – Jacksonville, Baker County Middle School, Macclenny – Number 5 for Jacksonville caught a touchdown on Sunday. The big target made the throw easy for his quarterback, walling off his defender on the slant in the endzone. Making plays in the redzone will be routine for him in the future. This big framed prospect will only get better.
Cody Conness – South Florida, St Anthony, Fort Lauderdale – Number 3 for South Florida had a passing touchdown and converted a two point play through the air on Sunday. Both came in the 4th quarter, showing his toughness and will to win in a Championship setting. The signal caller battled a tough defense and kept his head up throughout the day. Displaying very good mechanics, he has the tools to be great player in the future. A fierce competitor, he demands a lot of himself and his teammates.
Jamar Meikle – South Florida, New Renaissance Middle, Miramar – Number 9 for South Florida made a two point conversion catch on Sunday. Coming in the 4th quarter, Meikle was up to the task of helping bring the South Florida team back from a deficit. The receiver made a great grab in the endzone, getting open despite good coverage from the defense. Showing his will to never give up, Meikle helped make it a close game in crunch time. His was one of the best highlights of the day for the South Florida team.
