Continue ReadingMadison Central has been in pursuit of a state title since their last one in 1999 and finally accomplished that feat defeating Brandon 24-17 on Friday night in Hattiesburg. Brandon scored on a Landon Varnes pass on the first drive of the game, but late-season hero Jake Norris rallied the troops for the Jags and pushed them to victory on his way to MVP honors. Check out all of the news and notes from the 6A title game here.
- When Vic Sutton Vic Sutton 6'3" | 200 lbs | QB Madison Central | 2023 State MS went down injured weeks ago Coach Toby Collums, in his first season at Madison Central, had questions to answer. Jake Norris, who had taken the majority of his snaps at TE this season, was the answer. Norris led the Jags to victory against Starkville in the North Half Championship last week before ultimately winning the MVP in last nights State Title game. Norris was 5 for 9 thru the air for 124 yards and a TD as well as rushing 11 times for 55 yards and another TD. Norris came on strong with a great understanding of the offense and a will to win attitude. Some guys are just “ballplayers” and Norris fits that mold.
- Isaiah Spencer Isaiah Spencer 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Madison Central | 2023 State MS continues to trend as one of the state’s top 2023 WR’s. 4 receptions for 95 yards and a TD (79 yard TD) paced the Jags. When MC had to go to the air, Spencer was the obvious target. With a great mix of size and speed, we believe Spencer is just scratching the surface of his potential – that was on full display in Hattiesburg.
- Landon Varnes will be one of the top QB’s in the state in 2024 and I expect to see the Bulldog’s back in the mix next season because of the sophomore signal caller. Varnes shined under the brightest lights for first year Head Coach Sam Williams. 16 for 27, 297 yards and a TD was an impressive stat line and kept Brandon in the game. Varnes fits the needs of the traditional spread offense that is so prevalent in today’s game. Obvious D1 potential here.
- We have been high on Lester Miller Lester Miller 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Brandon | 2023 State MS for a long time and he proved why in a big way last night. Miller led all receiving with 8 grabs for 170 yards and a TD. Miller at one time was thought of as a DB but that projection has now swung to the offensive side. Speed and athleticism with impressive body control show with Miller. He’s a major slept on 2022 currently.
- Jarvis Durr Jarvis Durr 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Brandon | 2023 State MS is a name that will heat up at RB moving into his senior season next year. Prototype size with good combination of physicality and finesse. 100 + yards and a TD in the state title game will turn some heads.
Expect to see much more of Madison Central and Brandon in the coming years with young talent showing across the board.
