As they won the last two 6A titles, the Rockets moved down this year to 5A, and as the season moved along, it was evident that if you intended to win a state crown, it would have to go through the Rockets.
While Central was securing yet another trip to the state finals, the Merritt Island Mustangs, a playoff team for much of the 70’s and 80’s, was finding some of that old magic with graduate Hurlie Brown, who had given this team a huge boost – with his college coaching background and knowledge of how to place student/athletes into college.
When these two teams get together at 1:00 this afternoon at DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale, it will not only be two of the best 5A programs in Florida, but college roommates and longtime friends as University of Miami graduates Smith and Brown will face off for the first time with everything on the line!
