From the beginning the Warriors offensive and defensive lines controlled the line of scrimmage. 2022’s Jayron Gibson and Jayden Denton Jayden Denton 6'3" | 230 lbs | DL Winton Woods | 2022 OH we’re living in LaSalle’s backfield disrupting the Lancer offense. I saw Jayron at a big man camp this spring and he’s a kid that I project him as a D1 FCS to a D1 Mid Major talent. Denton played head up on the opposing tackle and held his ground in the rush game and used his quickness to get in the backfield and make plays.
The backend of the defense had a day as well. It was fitting that the last two LaSalle drives ended on interceptions by 2023 DB’s Cameron Calhoun and Jermaine Mathews, because they were making plays all night long just like they have all season. Calhoun’s INT was his 8th of the season. Both are long, athletic ballhawks that can play in a man v man or a zone schemes. They both have the potential to be D1 P5 prospects. 2023 Qierstin Williams and 2022 Seven Blue Seven Blue 6'0" | 220 lbs | LB Winton woods | 2022 OH are well put together linebackers who are good in pursuit and thumpers at the second level.
On the offensive side of the ball Right Tackle 2022 Damarion “Big Baby” Stone (6’6 315) did a really nice job of sealing off the edge and opening up the outside run game for the Warriors. Stone has a wide frame and is has good feet to cut off an opposing speed rush. 2024 Henry Johnson Jr. (6’3 250) is a young athletic lineman who is one I’m very interested to see develop over the next 2 years.
The big play machines on offense this night were running backs 2022 Tyrek Spikes and 2023 KC Spears combined for many big runs and TD’s on the evening. Spikes is a diminutive 5’7 165, but he has rare explosiveness and change of direction traits. He has great vision and does an excellent job of hiding behind and setting up his linemen’s blocks. Spears did most of his damage on jet sweeps. He showed the ability to make guys miss, find creases to run through, but most importantly the speed to finish. Once Spears was able to get into the open field there were few that could or did catch him.
Winton Woods advances to the elite 8 of the OHSAA football playoffs and a matchup with the Piqua Indians.
