The regular season has come to a close in the state of Arkansas and it has been terrific high school football season. We enjoyed being able to cover games in the Natural State after taking a few years away. Before we jump into playoff coverage, let’s take a look at what we learned from week 10 of the high school football season.
The first item of business is to look at the battle that Bryant and Conway had for the 7-A Central championship last Friday. Bryant and Conway came down to the very end with the Hornets earning the 7-A Central conference championship on Friday night. Running back [player_tooltip player_id="152083" first="Chris" last="Gannaway"] helped set the tone for the Hornets on Friday night. He rushed for 188 yards on 24 carries. Conway and Bryant are two extremely impressive teams coming out of the 7-A Central. The 7-A playoffs are shaping up to be extremely competitive this postseason.
Shifting our attention to the 7-A West. The Fayetteville Bulldogs accomplished an impressive feat winning an outright conference championship. In a conference, which has Bentonville, Har-Ber, Rogers, and Bentonville West this was extremely impressive. Fayetteville capped an undefeated conference season with a strong victory over Har-Ber. [player_tooltip player_id="94925" first="Jalen" last="Blackburn"], [player_tooltip player_id="75066" first="Isaiah" last="Sategna"], [player_tooltip player_id="156890" first="Dylan" last="Kittell"], and [player_tooltip player_id="75105" first="Bladen" last="Fike"] appear to be clicking on all cylinders and are going to be a difficult team to defeat in the playoffs.
In the 5-A West, plenty was on the line when Vilonia and Greenbrier squared off on Friday night. Two impressive senior quarterbacks matched up on Friday with Greenbrier’s [player_tooltip player_id="94994" first="Cooper" last="Wilcox"] getting the better of Vilonia’s [player_tooltip player_id="75081" first="Austin" last="Myers"]. Wilcox passed for 170 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for 84 yards and another touchdown. Greenbrier capped off the regular season with a 10-0 record. The 5-A Conference is a tough one with Pulaski Academy waiting for challengers in a deep and talented conference.
The 3-A Conference has some of the scrappiest football teams in the state. When you have Prescott, Hoxie, Charleston. and Booneville battling it out as the one seeds in the playoffs you know have you some exciting games coming up over the next few weeks. The 3-A playoff has the potential to be one of the hardest fought playoffs in quite a few years. Cedarville and McGehee are two teams that have the ability to go on a run as well. What we have learned about the 3-A Conference over the season is that any team is capable of walking into War Memorial Stadium and winning a state championship.
In a few weeks, after the state playoffs have completed Prep RedZone Arkansas will be releasing a first, second, and third team. Many players are worthy of a spot on those teams, and we look forward to being able to look at each one. It has been a great regular season and hopefully the postseason can be just as exciting. Good luck to all the teams and players in the playoffs and enjoy a few more Friday nights under the lights.
