Matchup Breakdown: The New York Mills Eagles enter the state tournament on high note winning their section in dominating fashion, outscoring opponents 106-20 with two shutouts. The Eagles are led by a dominant rushing attack that features a three headed monster of, Bren Salo, Eathan Ruther and Jonah Johnson. Johnson is the home run hitter of the bunch, possessing break away speed on the perimeter and forcing teams to respect the outside run. Salo and Ruther provide the thunder for the Eagles rushing attack. Both are well built and are physical runners between the tackles, creating positive yards after contact on pretty much every carry. Defensively, the Eagles do a phenomenal job eating blocks up front to allow their LB’s to flow to the ball. Ruther and senior LB Dane Niemi lead the way as physical presences for the Eagles defense.
The Deer River Warriors ran through their regular season and playoff schedule with a perfect 11-0 record. The Warriors are led by UMD recruit Tate Kongsjord, Ty Morrison, one of the top basketball recruits in the state, and a number of talented juniors who have helped lead the Warriors one of the best seasons in school history. One of those juniors is QB Sam Rahier, who provides a steady hand in leading the offense. Rahier is not the biggest of QB’s but has an accurate arm and forces defenses to respect his legs with a number of designed QB runs. His two favorite targets are Morrison and junior TE Rhett Mundt. Both of these targets stand over 6’2″ and are the primary targets on many of the designed roll outs and bootlegs. On defense, the Warriors control the line of scrimmage with a 5-3 defensive front. The DL is led by Kongsjord and senior Hunter Stolley who play with aggression and physicality that allow the three LB’s to play through open gaps.
