The Humboldt senior is one of the top players in the state.
Oh, and he also just so happens to be uncommitted at this time. Hint, hint to Mark Farley and company at Northern Iowa as he’ll be taking to your field against Harlan in a few days.
Matson showed off his incredible skills and competitiveness in leading the Wildcats to a 42-21 victory over Independence this past week. Humboldt got off to a quick start before putting the Mustangs to bed in the second half.
And for much of it, Matson was at the center of it all. Just as he has been all season long.
But it was something about this night, and this performance, that really made an impact.
First off, here are the numbers for Matson. He completed 6 of 10 passes for 122 yards with two touchdowns, while also carrying the ball 31 times for 233 yards and two more scores.
That’s 41 official plays from scrimmage and 24 points.
But we cannot forget that he also is the starting safety on defense where he made 9.5 tackles, a half-a-tackle for loss and picked off a pass.
Needless to say when I asked Matson how he felt after the game, he said “awesome.” But pressed further and when I mentioned how his body would feel come Saturday morning, he admitted that “yeah, I’m going to be pretty sore.”
Sore, yes, but a winner as well.
From the numbers, it might have looked as if Matson was a one-man band. That is far from the case.
First, sophomore running back Lance Coon showed incredible speed and quickness while running the RPOs with Matson at the helm, He quickly scampered to the end zone twice, finishing with 70 yards on just eight carries.
Matson’s athletic receiving group of Jacob Heier, Will Orness and Corey Dettmann were held relatively in-check for themselves, but they were key components of the run game.
All three would constantly work down the field to clear lanes for Matson to work his magic.
Humboldt also has some key players to take note of on the defensive side of the ball. Junior Tayeton Lohaus delivered some big-time stops on Independence running back Marcy Beatty, recording 3.5 tackles with sack.
