As we have done throughout the season – with tremendous response – is to cover every area and bring you games, spotlight features and team breakdowns to better help you follow high school football in Florida.
If you read us every day, you already know that we cover every area of the state – and not just sitting behind a computer screen and pretend that you are there watching and evaluating live.
As we leave the regular season here is 2021, here are 10 interesting games to check out on this final weekend:
No. 16 Cocoa (7-1) at Rockledge (8-1). The annual “BBQ Bowl” should once again be a contest that will be overflowing with fans from both schools. Two well coached teams on their way to the state playoffs with plenty of optimism. This is an annual game that is for real.
Davie Western (7-2) at Miramar (6-2). Two district champions who used to be in the same class and district, but this is a game where a lot is on the line. Neither team has yielded a touchdown in over a month and both are going to give teams in 7A and 8A plenty of headaches in the playoffs. Great season-ender!
Fort Myers Dunbar (8-0) at Lehigh (6-1). Two really good teams with stars on both sides of the ball and solid coaching. Dunbar has the talent to make some noise in the playoffs. They will need to be more offensive as each round passes. Another potential #239 classic.
No. 22 Gainesville Buchholz (8-1) at No. 25 Jacksonville Bartram Trail (8-1). Are there two hotter teams right now? Both have run a gauntlet to send themselves to the playoffs – and while tonight’s game will be special – here are two programs that are going to be tough to eliminate from the state playoffs. Another of those scores everyone will be seeking out tonight and throughout the weekend.
No. 17 Lakeland at No. 25 St. Petersburg Lakewood (8-1). Another potential classic of two solid teams with different approaches to the game. While the Dreadnaughts have long been publicized for what they’ve done through the decades, it’s the Spartans who have become successful by producing top-flight collegiate and NFL teams. They dropped a game last week to Chaminade-Madonna, but not many programs in Florida will beat Chaminade. Great game!
Lakeland Lake Gibson (6-3) at Auburndale (8-0). Hey, wait a minute. Polk County may have had one of its finest years in a long time. Just look how many have stepped it up – and these two programs are no exceptions. Growing pains for the Braves who went through a coaching change and a crazy early schedule, but are in a groove. The Bloodhounds are UNBEATEN. They have tremendous coaching and as many football players they have had in a long time. Another interesting matchup.
Miami Edison (6-3) at Miami Palmetto (6-2). 3A vs. 8A. But that only backs up that it does not matter what size school you have in south Florida. These two teams are loaded with impressive talent and very good coaching. It could turn out to be one of those games they will talk about. We shall see.
North Marion (6-3) at Hawthorne (7-0). For some crazy reason, this should be a really good game – with the defending 1A state runner up Hornets looking to remain unbeaten against a very athletic and talented Colts’ squad that has played pretty competitive football. Good one to send the folks into the playoffs.
No. 9 Orlando Edgewater at Orlando Boone (7-2). If you are football fan in the central Florida area and haven’t attended one of the oldest rivalries in the region, you are missing out. The Eagles are looking to get back to the 7A state finals for the third straight year – while the Braves are looking for some positives heading into the 8A playoffs.
Tampa Catholic (6-2) at No. 2 Tampa Jesuit (8-0). This is one of those local games that means a lot to the respective communities. It doesn’t hurt that you have one of the best teams in Florida going against a program that has been growing over the past three seasons – with tremendous coaching and emerging talent. Jesuit is a machine with few weaknesses. They are quick, big, talented and disciplined – and that is why they have been so successful.
