Championship History: 6-8 (15th Title Appearance)
Bixby is back in the championship game for the eighth consecutive year and the 15th time in school history. The eight straight title appearances is second best in state history, behind Morrison’s nine straight title appearances from 1986-1994. The Spartans have owned 6A-2 since the class was created in 2014. They’ve participated in every 6A-2 state championship and have won six championships out of the last seven years. The Spartans will be moving up to 6A-1 following this season but they’ll attempt to capture their fourth straight state championship and make it seven titles in eight years before they say so long to the class that they’ve owned for nearly a decade.
Offensive Production: 60.9 Points Per Game
As if there was any question, it’s pretty safe to say that Bixby has the best offensive unit in Oklahoma this season. After averaging over 50 points per game last year, the Spartans took their game to another level and averaged over 60 points per game this year. They failed to score at least 50 points just three times this season and routinely got into the 60’s and 70’s. What’s crazy is if we went through every box score, you would see that the Spartans were averaging around 50 points per game in the first half alone. Nearly every single game this season was over by halftime as the Spartans could not be contained.
Defensive Production: 10.8 Points Per Game
Bixby has beaten opponents by an average margin of 50.1 points per game. The Spartans clearly has the best offense in the state but the defense isn’t too shabby either. They’ve been shutting down opponents all season and giving up just north of ten points per game. The most points they’ve given up was 20 points to Booker T Washington in week ten and that was the only time they gave up 20 points. The Spartans were absolutely lights out on the defensive side of the ball. Even though the offense got plenty of the headlines, the defense was just as important to their dominance this season.
Notable
This isn’t breaking news unless you’ve been living under a rock for over three years. The Bixby Spartans come into the championship game with a 48-game winning streak. Their semifinal win tied Wagoner’s winning streak from 2014-2017 for the most by an 11-man program in state history. They will have a chance to break the record while also winning the state championship in Edmond. The Spartans haven’t lost since the opening game of the 2018 season to Jenks.
#7 DEER CREEK ANTLERS (10-2)
Aug. 27 – Beat Edmond North 35-7
Sept. 3 – Beat Southmoore 44-0
Sept. 10 – Beat Yukon 35-14
Sept. 24 – Lost To Stillwater 35-28 (2OT)
Oct. 1 – Beat Putnam City North 38-13
Oct. 8 – Beat Northwest Classen 70-0
Oct. 14 – Beat Midwest City 23-6
Oct. 22 – Lost To Del City 35-28 (OT)
Oct. 29 – Beat Lawton 67-20
Nov. 5 – Beat U.S. Grant 65-7
Quarterfinals – Beat Choctaw 36-29
Semifinals – Beat Sand Springs 20-17
Championship History: 1-0 (2nd Title Appearance)
Deer Creek will play for a state championship for only the second time in school history. The Antlers made it to the championship game back in 2000 and captured the Class 3A state championship during their one and only appearance. The Antlers are making their run to the title game this year in pretty impressive fashion. Since moving up to 6A-2 back in 2016, the Antlers hadn’t won a playoff game until this year, when they went on the road and stunned Choctaw. We mentioned it in last year’s semifinal preview. It had been a while since the Antlers had experienced any kind of playoff success, let alone a potential deep run in the playoffs.
Offensive Production: 40.8 Points Per Game
In most cases, Deer Creek’s 40.8 points per game would be incredibly good but going up against Bixby’s 60 points per game, it certainly doesn’t seem like enough. However, the Antlers have been outstanding on the offensive side of the ball and even in their losses, they managed to put up plenty of points. The Antlers padded those offensive numbers down the stretch with back to back 60+ point performances in their final two games. Like Bixby, the Antlers have an incredibly balanced offense and have beaten teams with the passing game as well as the rush and has routinely been tough to slow down.
Defensive Production: 15.3 Points Per Game
Going along with Deer Creek’s balanced offense has been a defensive unit that has been one of the better units in 6A-2 this season. The Antlers have given up just 15 points per game this season and are coming off a semifinal game where they gave up just 17 points to Sand Springs. The Antlers gave up more than 20 points just three times this season and were one of the better teams in 6A-2 in points allowed. Now, the state title game against Bixby will certainly be the toughest test that they’ve faced this year as nobody has been able to contain and slow down the Spartan offense. Deer Creek gets their shot next.
Notable
You can make the argument that Deer Creek should have expected to be here and playing for the state championship. The Antlers lost twice this season and both games went into overtime. Their first loss to Stillwater went to double overtime. The Antlers have been one of the more underrated teams in the state, regardless of class and maybe we should have seen this run coming. They’re also comfortable in close games with their two playoff victories coming by a combined ten points.
