The Missouri Class 6 semifinal matchup between host CBC and Lee’s Summit North on Friday night lived up to the billing as a true heavyweight fight that came down to the final seconds.
Top-ranked CBC trailed by 14 points with 3 minutes remaining in the third quarter, but rallied to score three unanswered touchdowns and then held on for a 28-21 victory.
CBC will now face Liberty North (11-1) at 1 p.m. next Saturday (Nov. 27) in the Class 6 championship game at the University of Missouri. The Cadets, who won back to back titles in 2017 and 2018, will be seeking their fourth championship in eight seasons.
PLAYERS OF THE GAME
CBC (12-1)
QB [player_tooltip player_id="37608" first="Patrick" last="Heitert"] 2022
Heitert continued his remarkable senior season with a four-touchdown performance. After the Cadets got down by two scores, Heitert answered with a 34-yard touchdown pass to senior WR [player_tooltip player_id="172629" first="Gavin" last="Conley"] late in the third quarter and then scored on two short runs in the first few minutes of the fourth. Heitert, who has offers from Southeast Missouri State and Dayton, completed 20 of 27 passes for 270 yards and one touchdown and ran for 20 yards and three scores. In 13 games this fall, he has thrown for 2,879 yards with 20 touchdowns (against five interceptions) and run for 379 yards and 12 scores.
WR [player_tooltip player_id="126237" first="Jeremiah" last="McClellan"] 2024
One of the state’s top sophomores, McClellan shined again with six receptions for 124 yards. He made a few clutch catches when his team needed him to come through. For the season, McClellan has 41 receptions for 989 yards and nine touchdowns.
RB [player_tooltip player_id="171841" first="Dylan" last="Van"] 2023
CBC has three good junior running backs, with Van, [player_tooltip player_id="103779" first="Jeremiyah" last="Love"] and [player_tooltip player_id="37738" first="Ralph" last="Dixon"], and each of the three has taken charge at different times this season. On Friday, it was Van, who rushed for 84 yards on 13 carries and had a late won’t-be-denied burst through the defense to set up one of Heitert’s touchdown runs. Van has rushed for 644 yards and 12 touchdowns on 112 carries this season, an average of 5.8 yards per carry.
S/LB [player_tooltip player_id="237184" first="Lucas" last="McAllister"] 2023
McAllister moved from his safety spot to linebacker with a teammate out with an injury and he responded with a team-high 10 tackles and a sack. McAllister, who had nine tackles in the previous game, has 78 tackles, two interceptions and a sack this season.
WR [player_tooltip player_id="172629" first="Gavin" last="Conley"] 2022 / WR [player_tooltip player_id="99471" first="Dakotah" last="Mayo"] 2023
Conley finished with five catches for 73 yards and a touchdown, his second of the year. Mayo, a speedy junior with an offer from Arkansas State, finished with five catches for 44 yards, but also had a 68-yard touchdown reception called back on a penalty.
Lee’s Summit North (11-2)
OL [player_tooltip player_id="99439" first="Armand" last="Membou"] 2022 / OL [player_tooltip player_id="37658" first="Cayden" last="Green"] 2023
The Division I bookends on the Broncos’ offensive line led the way up front as the offensive line was able to get a push in the run game and give quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="171825" first="Tre" last="Baker"] several seconds to locate receivers. It’s easy to see why Lee’s Summit North was one of the state’s top teams this season and it starts with the dominant group up front that is led by Membou, a Missouri commitment, and Green, one of the top prospects in the Midwest in the junior class who has offers from Georgia, Oklahoma, Oregon and several others.
QB [player_tooltip player_id="171825" first="Tre" last="Baker"] 2022
A Southern Illinois commitment, Baker showed his all-around playmaking ability by making plays with his arm and his legs. He completed 14 of 25 passes for 153 yards with one touchdown and finished the season with 2,274 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. He also serves as the team’s punter and landed two of his four punts inside the 20-yard line.
RB [player_tooltip player_id="177944" first="Quincey" last="Baker"] 2023 / RB [player_tooltip player_id="230439" first="Tanner" last="Howes"] 2024
The Broncos’ running backs combined for 142 yards rushing and a touchdown on 21 carries. Baker gained 75 yards on 13 carries and gave the CBC run defense trouble early. Howes showed his dual-threat ability as he rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown on eight carries and also caught four passes for 35 yards and another touchdown. He also had a long kickoff return to get LSN in scoring position.
K [player_tooltip player_id="237185" first="Seth" last="Simpson"] 2023
Simpson displayed a strong left leg during warm-ups, even though the conditions were cold and windy, and then made an impact in the game and two field goals in the first quarter — a 35-yarder and a 41-yarder. He missed a 33-yarder into the wind early in the fourth quarter, though it looked like it was close enough that the official’s decision could have gone either way.
