Last week’s first round of the 6A playoffs saw every winner in the South half score at least 30 points as offenses dominated. Now as there are only 4 teams remaining in the south portion of the state will we see that trend continue? Here’s a preview of what and who to watch for this week.
Warren Central (9-3) @ Brandon (9-2)
The Bulldogs of Brandon dropped consecutive decisions to Oxford and Madison Central to open the 2021 campaign and have not looked back since then winning 9 games in a row. Now they will take on Warren Central for the second time this year after knocking them off 38-20 back on October 1st. That matchup saw their talented 2024 QB Landon Varnes complete 18-25 passes for 185 yards as well as a running game which notched 278 yards and 4 TD’s.
Warren Central took to the road and got the best of D’Iberville in a bit of an upset last week. The Vikings have got elite play throughout the year from 2023 Trey Hall at both WR and RB. Hall provided a 15 yard TD reception last week. Another offensive name to be on the lookout for is 2022 WR Preston Lynch. Lynch has elite length at nearly 6"5 and has been under-recruited in this cycle. Timothy Thompson is also knocking on the door of 1,000 rushing yards for the year.
Oak Grove (9-2) @ Ocean Springs (11-0)
The game of the week is down on the coast as defending state champ, Oak Grove heads on the road to face the undefeated Greyhounds of Ocean Springs. Both teams made quick work last week with Ocean Springs defeating Pearl 54-28 and Oak Grove besting Gulfport 33-7.
Ocean Springs QB [player_tooltip player_id="108938" first="Bray" last="Hubbard"] has had one of the best seasons in Class 6A this year and if the Greyhounds want to remain unblemished it starts with their 2023 QB. Hubbard is 148-215 for 2007 yards, 30 TD’s to 3 INT for the year and also has 1071 yards and 20 TD’s on the ground. The production from 2022 RB David Humphries has given the offense another great weapon. Humphries is also over 1,000 yards toting the ball with 14 TD’s.
The Warriors have more names to watch than can be counted and that is why they came into 2021 as the odds on favorite in 6A. [player_tooltip player_id="104068" first="Kabe" last="Barnett"] is nothing short of electric and is one of the best players in the state when he is protecting the football. At WR, 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="104208" first="Tyrell" last="Pollard"] has had a monstrous season with over 800 yards to go with 7 TD’s. If the defense plays like they did vs. Gulfport last week then this is a team to watch out for.
