In what was, on paper, a game between one of the surprise offenses of the season and another finally finding its way, Dorman’s defense was the unit that rose to the challenge, holding Riverside to two touchdowns in a 47-14 rout that gave the Cavaliers a 1-0 start in Region II-5A play.
Riverside came into the game 6-0 for the first time ever, scoring nearly 34 points per game and giving up fewer than 10. Dorman made short work of reversing those numbers.
The Cavaliers’ defense locked down after the Warriors’ second drive. Hudson Lee Hudson Lee 6'5" | 250 lbs | DL Dorman | 2022 State SC had a monster game in the first half alone, recording 10 tackles, a sack, 2.5 tackles for loss and a pass break-up before the break. Lee finished with 14 tackles 1.5 sacks, and 3 tackles for loss to earn Player of the Week honors. Teammate Bo Roseborough had 6 of his 9 tackles in the first half, along with 3 sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss, and a hurry.
Dorman had 5 sacks, 7 tackles for loss, and 3 hurries in the first half alone, finishing with 7 sacks and 11 tackles for loss . Riverside was limited to 125 total yards in the half, including just 23 rushing yards on 20 carries.
• Dorman showed plenty on the offensive end, too. The Cavaliers rolled up 551 yards of total offense, including 434 rushing yards on 35 carries. Chamarryus Bomar led the way for Dorman, picking up 165 yards and scoring twice on just 7 carries. One of those was a stunning run in the second half that saw him reverse field, turn a would-be tackler completely around, and use the width of the field to set up the final block that sprung him for the score. Demarius Foster also had a good night for the Cavaliers, with 132 yards on 11 carries.
• DJ Porter had a big night for Dorman, and it started early. After establishing the run in last week’s win over Ridge View, the Cavaliers took the top off the Riverside defense on their first offensive play of the game, as Hudson Talley went up top to Porter, who hauled it in for a 60-yard score. He added a 47-yard touchdown run later in the game, and finished with 147 all-purpose yards.
• For the Warriors, it was a matter of what might have been for Robinson Sanders Robinson Sanders 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Riverside | 2023 State SC . He looked shaky on the game’s first series, but recovered well. He started the second series with a dart to Alex Riddle Alex Riddle 6'1" | 165 lbs | WR Riverside | 2022 State SC for 27 yards, a play that could have gone for a score had Riddle not lost his balance in the middle of the field. He hit Cayden Cosby Cayden Cosby 5'8" | 160 lbs | WR Riverside | 2023 SC for 25 yards later in the drive, and hit Riddle with a perfect pass in the corner of the end zone for a 22-yard score to knot the game at 7-7. Unfortunately for the Warriors, that was Sanders’ last throw of the night, as he left the game with an undisclosed injury. He finished 4-for-7 for 81 yards and a score.
• Riddle came up big for the Warriors as well. He added a second-half touchdown to his opening score, snatching Stewart Chaffee’s pass out of the air with one hand for a 20-yard score, finishing with 6 catches for 92 yards.
