The regular season wrapped up with some shootouts games and a triple overtime game, a rarity at the high school level. Here’s some games and players that stood out.
<strong>Game of the Week, Part I:</strong> Look no further than Ray-Pec’s 43-40 win in triple overtime against Park Hill to end the regular season with five straight wins and a 7-2 record. The game ended with a 27-yard field goal by Trey Kudron that ended the marathon game. Both quarterbacks passed for touchdowns in the first two overtimes to keep the game going. Ray-Pec QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="103410" first="Zander" last="Dombrowski"]</strong> was 16 for 29 for 249 yards and five TDs. The Blue Springs South transfer tossed two touchdowns to <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="99468" first="Jaidyn" last="Doss"]</strong>, who had seven catches for 80 yards. He also returned a punt 54 yards for a touchdown. Park Hill had a number of standouts as well, led by QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="177888" first="Kendrick" last="Bell"]</strong>. He was 22 for 47 for 394 yards and five TDs. He spread the ball around to three different targets. TE <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="224381" first="Jake" last="Powell"]</strong> had seven catches for 107 yards and a score. <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="37742" first="James" last="Noel"]</strong> and <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="172295" first="PJ" last="Caldwell"]</strong> each had two TDs for the Trojans. The game featured 150 plays and 933 yards of total offense.
<strong>Game of the Week, Part II:</strong> Another close game was Excelsior Springs pulling out a 41-40 win over Pleasant Hill, with the game ending on a fumble return for a touchdown with 2:37 left. QB <strong>Chance Moreland</strong> ran for 102 yards on 17 carries, but the star for Excelsior Springs was RB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="224383" first="Amani" last="Robinson"]</strong>, who had 202 yards on 28 carries and two TDs. Pleasant Hill’s <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="217654" first="Dylan" last="Kauffman"]</strong> had 36 carries for 222 with three TDs. This game featured 147 plays and 926 yards of total offense between the two Missouri River Valley Conference foes.
<strong>Conference champs:</strong> For the second straight year the St. Pius X Warriors won the Midland Empire Conference, though there wasn’t much drama thanks to a 35-0 win over Savannah. The Warriors went 8-1 in the regular season with the lone setback coming to St. James (Kan.) Academy. QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="203579" first="Jack" last="Mosh"]</strong> was 18 for 25 for 180 yards and 4 TDs in the win over Savannah. <strong>Reed McCann</strong> had nine catches for 97 yards and two of the touchdowns.
<strong>Efficient night:</strong> <strong>Sam Calvert</strong> had only three catches but each were big for Smithville in a 42-7 win over Winnetonka. The victory meant the Class 4 No. 1-ranked Warriors finished the year 8-0 and the senior played a big role in it as he had touchdown catches for 5, 10 and 15 yards in the second quarter. That turned a 14-7 lead into a 35-7 advantage. He finished with 3 catches for 30 yards. QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="179109" first="Andrew" last="Hedgecorth"]</strong> was 9 for 14 for 111 yards for Smithville. Two other running backs had big nights as well. Lee’s Summit North’s <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="177944" first="Quincey" last="Baker"]</strong> had only 22 yards but scored three TDs in a 38-6 win over Lee’s Summit West. Platte County’s <strong>Nate Walls</strong> ran for four touchdowns on 17 carries for 113 yards to help his state-ranked team close the regular season with a 39-3 against Lansing (Kan.).
<strong>5 TD night:</strong> Raytown running back <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="96148" first="Zhamari" last="Gary"]</strong> ran for 117 yards and four touchdowns, spanning 6, 19, 19 and 21 yards in a 56-7 win over Truman. He added two catches and had a 73-yard touchdown catch as well. Another 5-TD game came from <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="224379" first="Garrett" last="Bayless"]</strong>. The Odessa QB threw two touchdowns and 220 yards, while running for 48 yards and 3 TDs, with scoring plays of 7, 15 and 10. That performance helped the Bulldogs get back in the win column after their 31-game winning streak ended last week.
<strong>Streak snapped:</strong> Warrensburg QB <strong>[player_tooltip player_id="203571" first="Luke" last="Othic"]</strong> has had a number of big games this year but he came up big in a 35-28 win over Oak Grove on Friday in a Missouri River Valley Conference game. That snapped a four-game losing streak, which includes three losses by a combined 16 points. Othic was 7 for 9 for 160 yards and a touchdown and then rolled up 130 yards on 18 carries and added three more touchdowns.
