Region races are being decided and teams are preparing for the playoff stretch as the regular season enters its final weeks. Here’s a look at several players who made the most of their opportunities and earned Prep Redzone game balls in the Spartanburg and Cherokee County area on Friday.
Another Friday, another stellar outing for Gaffney’s two-headed beast at running back. [player_tooltip player_id="31310" first="Tyler" last="Smith"] and <strong>Ken Littlejohn</strong> have dazzled this year, and Friday was no exception. Smith topped 200 yards, rushing for 209 and a pair of touchdowns, while Littlejohn added 116 yards and another score. The duo combined to average more than 12 yards per carry.
Broome got outstanding games from both <strong>Jamir Dewberry</strong> and [player_tooltip player_id="91250" first="Dylan" last="Ramirez"] (pictured). Ramirez rushed for 114 yards and 2 touchdowns in a win over Union County, while throwing for 182 yards and 2 more scores. Both of those passing touchdowns went to Dewberry, who notched 90 receiving yards in addition to the touchdowns. He also led the way on the ground, rushing for 137 yards and 2 more scores on 17 carries. The duo also combined for 11 total tackles, with Ramirez adding a tackle for loss and a pass break-up.
Byrnes’ [player_tooltip player_id="194225" first="Thomas" last="Gregory"] turned in a big night in the Rebels’ pivotal Region II-5A win over Dorman. Gregory caught 4 balls for 105 yards, including a 79-yard TD to open the Rebels’ scoring in a 20-17 victory.
[player_tooltip player_id="153245" first="DJ" last="Black"] helped lead Chapman to a 27-26 win over Clinton to maintain control of Region III-3A. Black had 7 catches for 132 yards and 2 touchdowns, including what proved to be the game winner as he wrestled the reception away from a Red Devils defensive back while falling out of bounds.
Chesnee kicker <strong>Ezequiel Lazarin</strong> hit his second last-minute game winner of the season. This time, the boot came on the game’s final play, as Lazarin nailed a 24-yarder as time expired to defeat Landrum 23-20.
