It’s already Week 7 in the football season and this is the time where the playoff picture really comes into focus. With teams clawing and fighting to get enough points to qualify for the playoffs, this is a huge week that could make it or break it for select teams. Let’s take a look at 4 of the best games in the Metro Detroit area.
Games to Watch
(5-1) Romeo @ (5-1) Sterling Heights/Utica Stevenson: For these two teams, they’ve already proven a lot with a playoff invitation surely headed their way. Romeo’s only loss is against a good Chippewa Valley team, while Stevenson’s only loss is against an excellent Rockford squad. I’m looking forward to seeing what Stevenson can do against the overwhelming Romeo defense. QB [player_tooltip player_id="93652" first="Biagio" last="Madonna"] and C Alex Wathen are going to have to perform extremely well against LB Anthony Lomakoski.
(2-3) Oak Park @ (4-2) Rochester: Oak Park needs this game. The thing is, we know they can play considering the recent history, most recently with Oak Park advancing to the state semifinals after being one of the lowest seeds last year. This is not 2020, which means not everyone gets a playoff bid. As for Rochester, they’ve been one of the fastest climbing teams in the state, earning a 4-2 record in the difficult OAA White. Standout QB Alex Bueno is going to be fun to watch against a great Oak Park secondary led by FS Glen Cross.
(2-4) Oxford @ (3-3) Stoney Creek: Both teams need this game to make them feel better about postseason play. Stoney Creek is coming off of an immaculate season which saw them shoot up the ranks and into the OAA Red. They’ve been playing well, but still, need a bit more for that playoff resume and this is a prime opportunity. As for Oxford, it’s been a turbulent road as they’re 2-4 though with a brutal schedule. If they can win this game, the strength of the schedule should put them in a decent playoff position heading into the final weeks. I’m looking at a classic RB vs MLB battle here as Oxford’s Tate Myre is going to have to deal with Stoney’s Seth Luhmann.
(6-0) Troy @ (4-2) Troy Athens: This OAA Blue matchup has a lot riding on it for both teams in very different ways. For Troy, they’re fighting for the league title with Bloomfield Hills, Berkley, and even Athens. The talent has seemingly exploded for the Troy Colts over the past year or so, and they’re truly at a peak of the program. With Athens, they need this game to have a good shot at the postseason. The strength of schedule isn’t great, so they absolutely need this one and they have a great shot on their home turf. I’m very excited to see Athens CB Andre Shelton face off against Troy WR [player_tooltip player_id="30347" first="Darius" last="Whiteside"] II in this one.
