As we inch further into the most important games of the regular season, players are starting to get into the groove.
That means they’re starting to have more breakout performances.
The following six players had highlight-reel Week 7 games that all helped their respective teams in weeks to come, either via big region wins or confidence down the stretch.
<strong>John Douglas</strong>, Socastee
Douglas is often asked to cover more ground than most tradition linebackers, given the Braves’ emphasis on the defensive line. Against St. James in a big Region VI-5A game, Douglas did just that. He put up four solo tackles, six assisted stops, three tackles for loss and two sacks. The effort helped Socastee hold the Sharks to 125 yards of offense and just three points.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="200765" first="Tavarius" last="Hooks"]</strong>, North Myrtle Beach
OK, it was against Darlington. But Hooks’ performance - one that included 168 yards rushing and four touchdowns on just 16 carries - was key in that it helped re-establish the Chiefs’ rushing attack with [player_tooltip player_id="91208" first="Elijah" last="Vereen"], the electric two-way player who was out again with an ankle injury.
<strong>Trokel Prew</strong>, South Florence
The Bruins linebacker had himself a night against Wilson. Prew had 11 solo tackles, six assisted tackles, two sacks and two tackles for loss. That type of performance is quickly becoming the norm, as either him or fellow junior Jaylin Davis (or both) have this type of game week after week.
<strong>Colby Thorndyke/Dan Johnson</strong>, Green Sea Floyds
Against Timmonsville, the Trojans’ two-headed rushing attack absolutely went off. With just 22 combined carries, they rushed for 368 yards and seven touchdowns. Thorndyke had 177 and five scores, while Johnson put up 191 and two.<span class="Apple-converted-space"> </span>
[player_tooltip player_id="89345" first="Zolten" last="Osborne"], Fort Dorchester
One of the top players in the Class of 2023 showed he could self-motivate in a late non-region game against Goose Creek. Osborne threw for 386 yards and three touchdowns in a narrow victory over the nearby Gators in a clash of Class 5A power programs.
