If there is a relative lull in the schedule along the coast this year, it is probably this week, as many of the high-profile non-region games are in the rearview while most of the huge region match-ups are set for later in the month.
Still, three contests on tap for Friday include some key in-game breakdowns that will be attractive to fans of those teams and uncommitted observers alike.
We’ve got a pairing of the best defense against the best offense in SCISA, the best player in the Lowcountry against maybe the best team and a big Class 4A region match-up where losing will sting for weeks.
Hammond (5-0) at Trinity Collegiate (5-0)
Two of the very best teams in the SCISA ranks are looking for early bragging rights and a whole bunch of momentum that could carry the winner here for weeks to come. And believe that this game will be every bit about Trinity Collegiate’s high-powered offense led by [player_tooltip player_id="91178" first="Reggion" last="Bennett"] and [player_tooltip player_id="200708" first="Tre" last="McLeod"] against Hammond’s defense, one that has allowed a measly 28 points in five games. By comparison, both McLeod and Bennett have had games this season where they each scored more than in a single contest. Obviously, the [player_tooltip player_id="59468" first="CJ" last="Stokes"] factor could means plenty of points both ways, but either way, the running games will dictate what we see here.
Hilton Head (1-3) at Beaufort (4-1)
Everything on paper says this game is going to be a Beaufort blowout. The No. 10 Eagles have played some really good football this year, with only a loss to up-and-coming Oceanside Collegiate slowing down the likes of [player_tooltip player_id="89319" first="Tyler" last="Haley"], [player_tooltip player_id="200665" first="Alvin" last="Wilson"], [player_tooltip player_id="91356" first="Daryl" last="DePass"] and [player_tooltip player_id="89341" first="Eamon" last="Smalls"]. But in Hilton Head, the Lowcountry may have a potential spoiler waiting to rattle some cages. We all know about [player_tooltip player_id="59462" first="Jaylen" last="Sneed"], but an intriguing matchup to watch in this one is how huge Hilton Head offensive lineman [player_tooltip player_id="139291" first="Braylen" last="Kitty"] plays against Smalls and Wilson, two of the better defensive linemen in the state.
Myrtle Beach (2-1) at West Florence (4-1)
With both teams coming off a loss - Myrtle Beach to Fort Dorchester and West Florence’s against region foe Hartsville - it’s safe to say both will be itching to get back on track. And while all eyes will be on Myrtle Beach’s [player_tooltip player_id="59464" first="Adam" last="Randall"] and [player_tooltip player_id="59494" first="Ryan" last="Burger"] and West Florence’s [player_tooltip player_id="91198" first="Terry" last="McKithen"] and Orlando Hudson, the defensive play of guys like [player_tooltip player_id="146360" first="Cam" last="Ward"] and Franklin Emerson are just as important in what should be an all-important game in the Region VI-4A standings.
