We’re half-way through the season and teams need to start playing their best and winning these final region games. For some programs, that means feeding your best player, and often times, that’s the running back. It’s a deep group across the board and some of the state’s best proved why once again during the week 8 games.
Here are a few standout RBs from last weekend….
Justice Haynes Justice Haynes 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Buford | 2023 State GA – Blessed Trinity
It may have come in a tough less, but Titan’s RB Justice Haynes Justice Haynes 5'10" | 205 lbs | RB Buford | 2023 State GA proved why he’s one of the top running backs in the country this past weekend. The big junior, who will push for 5-star status sooner than later, was easily the best player in the region matchup against mighty Calhoun. Haynes ran all through the Yellow Jacket defense on Friday night, rushing 35 times for 244 yards and four TDs. His most impressive run was an 85-yards sprint where Haynes made a man miss in the trenches, put his foot in the ground and bursted down the field for an easy score. He made sure his Titans were in the game the entire time, but it just wasn’t enough in the end. Look for Haynes to be one of the state’s leading rushers by the end of the season.
Rashod Dubinion Rashod Dubinion 5'10" | 170 lbs | ATH Cedar Grove | 2022 State GA – Cedar Grove
The Atlanta-area back and future Arkansas Razorback is having an incredible senior season so far, and even though they came out on the losing end to powerhouse Lowndes on Friday night, Dubinion proved to South Georgia how North Georgia backs run. The athletic, twitchy back ran through the Vikings with 200+ rushing yards and two touchdowns. Not only did he use his speed, but he broke tackles all game long. He checks just about every box you look for in a running back and it’s been easy to see so far this year.
Jaylen Poe – North Paulding
Out in Paulding County is where you’ll find one of the more underrated backs in the state. Poe, a 5-foot-10 205-pound junior, is on a tear this season through 6 games for the Wolfpack. He’s averaging 140 yards per game and had his best performance this season on Friday night against the impressive Marietta Blue Devils. Not only did he lead North Paulding to the upset victory, but he was the player of the game, scoring four touchdowns in the victory. He showed great balance and the ability to keep running after bouncing off tackles. He showed great vision and flew through the hole the second it opened up. He also showed the ability to make big plays in open space and had no problem breaking off long runs. He might be the breakout running back in that region this year.
Keyjuan Brown – South Atlanta
One of the biggest sleeper backs in Atlanta, Brown has been putting on a show this year and is one of the state’s leading rushers at the moment. He’s been excellent all season, but he played on a different level last Friday against Towers, rushing 21 times for 260 yards and three touchdowns in a 55-20 victory. Every time he touched the ball, something good happened. The tackle-breaking 5-foot-10 200-pounder has no problem bowling through would-be tackles but showed he also has enough speed to break off a long run on any particular play. He’s playing like one of the best senior backs in Atlanta as he’s rushed for over 200 yards in his last five games. He’s absolutely a senior back who could help someone at the next level.
Simeon Askew- Houston County
It’s been a magical season for the Middle Georgia star who has been completely unstoppable so far this year. The senior Bear is looking to make history with his start, rushing for 207 yards per game so far. He’s coming off his biggest game of the year this past weekend as he rushed 35 times for 272 yards and three touchdowns, breaking off a long 76-yard run during the game. He’s a speedy back with size and just a natural runner. He knows what he’s doing with the ball, he’s instinctive between the tackles, and has enough speed to get to the edge and get up the field. He’s doing everything he can for the Bears and he’s going to push for the state rushing lead come December.
