Continue ReadingThis matchup between the Owls and Jaguars was a marquee game during Week 6, as it was a battle of two 4-1 teams loaded with talent. Mill Valley was looking to rebound after suffering their first loss in Week 5, and Olathe West was determined to extend their winning streak to five games.
The Jaguars came out firing on all cylinders, jumping out to a 20-0 lead in the first quarter. But the Owls wouldn’t go down without a fight. It was a back-and-forth affair until Mill Valley pulled away late in the third quarter and went on to win 47-32. Here’s a recap of some of the talented prospects that were on display (Unofficial Stats).
Offense:
Reice Kennedy – Mill Valley, RB, Class of ’22
Kennedy picks up Player of the Game in this one after having a huge night on the ground. Going into this game there wasn’t much talk about Kennedy, as the Jaguars’ elite receiving corps draws most of the attention. But this senior deserves more recognition after his performance. He went on to rush for 217 yards on 27 carries with two touchdowns. Reice helped the Jaguars pull away with a 68-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, and he came up with some key runs to seal the deal late in the game.
Hayden Jay Hayden Jay 6'1" | 185 lbs | QB Mill Valley | 2023 State KS – Mill Valley, QB, Class of ‘23
The 33rd ranked prospect in the Class of ’23 rankings had Mill Valley off to a hot start in this one. Jay delivered some big-time throws throughout the game, as he went 13 of 20 for 283 yards with four touchdowns and rushed for 45 yards on 11 carries. The Jaguars haven’t skipped a beat this year with Jay under center during his first full varsity season.
Mason McGavran – Olathe West, QB, Class of ’23
McGavran is another signal caller that has elevated his game in his first season starting. He’s been having a breakout year and has the Owls on pace to finish with an improved record from last season. Even in this tough loss McGavran still shined, going 14 of 20 for 199 yards with one touchdown pass and ran for 94 yards on 17 carries with two scores.
Anthony Favrow Anthony Favrow 5'10" | 195 lbs | RB Olathe West | 2022 State KS – Olathe West, RB, Class of ’22
There wasn’t much room to run for the top back in our Class of ’22 rankings. The Jaguars defensive front came ready to play, as they limited Favrow to just three yards per carry. However, Favrow did manage to rush for 86 yards and found the end zone once on a 10-yard score. Opposing teams have really keyed in on slowing him down this year, but he should still eclipse 1,000 yards for a third consecutive season.
Kendrick Jones Kendrick Jones 6'5" | 190 lbs | WR Mill Valley | 2022 State KS & Sean Allerheiligen Sean Allerheiligen 6'3" | 210 lbs | TE Mill Valley | 2022 State KS – MV, Class of ’22
This lengthy duo did damage against the Owls’ secondary. Jones hauled in six catches for 77 yards and scored on an impressive 16-yard touchdown in the back corner of the end zone. Allerheiligen made a case to be moved up in the rankings with his performance. The senior led the Jaguars in receiving yards, as he caught three passes for 93 yards with two touchdowns.
Defense:
Noah Coy – Mill Valley, LB, Class of ’23
It was a busy night for this junior as his name was called several times by the announcers. Coy was one of the leading tacklers for the Jaguars, going on to rack up 12 total on the night.
Sean Swearingen – Olathe West, DB, Class of ’23
Swearingen and the Owls’ secondary had their work cut out for them going toe to toe against four talented receivers. Despite the loss, this junior played well, breaking up a few passes and coming away with an impressive interception.
Truman Griffith – Mill Valley, DL, Class of ’24
Griffith has had a solid season so far during his first full year of varsity action. The sophomore heard his name called often as well, as he piled up seven total tackles. He’ll be a prospect to keep an eye on as he develops over these next few years.
