And the continued emergence and development of their 2023 and 2024 classes has played a big part of that success and continued optimism for more.
Junior receiver Harvey Broussard Harvey Broussard 6'4" | 180 lbs | WR St. Martinville | 2023 State LA has quickly become the Tigers’ most high-profile recruit since a realization during the past year that his future might lie in football and not basketball.
And a pair of sophomores, running back Steven Blanco Steven Blanco 5'10" | 190 lbs | RB St. Martinville | 2024 State LA and athlete Cullen Charles Cullen Charles 6'0" | 190 lbs | ATH St. Martinville | 2024 State LA , are becoming more well-known commodities at each step.
Blanco earned a starting role as a freshman, including a game-winning touchdown in St. Martinville’s overtime playoff victory against Kaplan, and has become an even bigger focal point as a sophomore.
He chatted for a few minutes after a pivotal district win against Abbeville this month about his and his team’s season and potential.
Hard-fought battle that got a little crazy late, but you guys escape. Take me through starting district on the right foot.
It was a great game. We fought hard. We’ve gotta clean up on a couple things that we did wrong, but they were a good team.
They struck first on the touchdown return, and then you were able to start kind of distributing the ball — went to Harvey (Broussard) first, you were able to establish some things on the ground and that opened some things up for Tanner (Harrison) as well. Take me through some of the balance that y’all had offensively to respond to that early hit from them and be able to start mounting some things.
We came in the game fired up, and we just felt like we were the better team and kept playing hard and fight.
Coach just talked to you guys about the fact that y’all are better than what y’all necessarily showed. You talked about the mistakes that you made. What are the goals and mindsets for this team this year? How good can this team be by the time you hit playoff mode?
We can be very good. We’ve got to come together every day and put in the hard work, but we can be very good.
With you being able to establish what you can on the ground, when you have guys like Harvey that are big pass catchers out there throwing blocks like he did, how nice is it to see those teammates out on the perimeter do that sort of thing? Not a lot of wide receivers like to block like that, but you had guys laying dudes out out there.
It feels great to have receivers that will block like that for me, and without them, I wouldn’t be able to do anything.”
