There were only two offensive touchdowns in the game, but that didn’t mean there was a lack of big plays – especially from Minneapolis South’s offense. Here are some of my favorite moments from the offensive side of the ball during South’s 16-6 win.
Rai’Shaun Wade South OL
Often pulling, leading a sweep, or kicking out a defensive lineman, the guard works well in space. That skill was most evident with a nice block in the open field on a screen. Coming out of the locker room to start the second half, he made the play of the game. The good hands’ guys were up front, and Wade lined up as one of the deep kick returners, expecting a squib kick. He got upfield, threw out a stiff arm, and returned the kickoff for a touchdown. Later, he opened a big hole working off a double team with fellow lineman Aiden Luhman. It seemed like most of the Tigers’ successful runs came following Wade, Luhman, and Teddy Lovan-Jackson.
Jaquill White South RB
Early in the game, White showed his speed around the corner on two runs. He did it again, and this time he made a cut for eight yards, then powered his way to a first down. White is not a big running back, but on a run off the right side made a cut and powered through a tacker for a first down. He showed his footwork again, making an excellent cut to pick up five yards. Then, he made a nice cut in the hole for a fifteen-yard gain. Late in the game, White should have been stopped in the backfield but showed his strength using a stiff arm for a fifteen-yard gain.
Toby Carr Edison QB
Carr was the Tommies’ biggest offensive threat. He broke a tackle and bounced a run to the outside for good yardage. Next, Carr took what looked like a broken play but got around the corner for a first down. He didn’t throw a lot, but he threw a perfect deep ball down the sidelines for a 76-yard touchdown. He showed his arm strength two more times with throws to the sidelines – one that converted a third and long. He showed his speed one more time late in the game, scrambling for a first down.
Rio Starr South WR
Starr scored the game’s first touchdown, showing his speed on a jet sweep for six yards. A nice cut gave him space to pick up a first down later in the game. Off the right side, he made a cut for a first down. Late in the game, he picked up another ten yards on the ground.
Robert Hampton Edison WR
Hampton used his speed and got behind the defense to catch a 76-yard touchdown pass. Then, he grabbed a screen pass and used good footwork to pick up a first down.
Adam Kelbrants Adam Kelbrants 6'1" | 195 lbs | LB MPLS South | 2022 State MN South RB
Kelbrants showed you everything you want as a runner. He made a nice run to the outside early. Then, he made two tough runs off tackle and later, showed great footwork and vision as he was bottled up but cut back and picked up eight yards.
Quick hits
Lamar Sloan Edison RB – tough run on the inside
Justin Benjamin Jr South WR – caught a ball in the flat, made a guy miss, and picked up 15 yards
