There were some impressive performances in the ground game for these two top ten teams, but with limited opportunities, wide receivers and quarterback stole the show during the Storm’s 31-21 victory.
Emmett Johnson Emmett Johnson 6'0" | 180 lbs | RB Holy Angels | 2022 State MN Holy Angels RB
It was tough sledding all night for the star runner. Even so, it was easy to see his skill. Even when the defensive front seven does its job, Johnson can get small to get through holes that are not very big. He made some nice moves in the open field the first time he got some room to run. He used his speed to get the corner even though the defense initially read the play. After a 15-yard run up the middle, Johnson showed his quick feet, giving him space for another 15-yard gain. A jump cut allowed him to pick up a first down. He took a direct snap on 4th and two, found a gap, and not only the first down but also the touchdown. He also did some damage on special teams with a 30-yard kickoff return.
Charlie Coenen Charlie Coenen 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Chanhassen | 2022 State MN Chanhassen WR
The one guy who gave Johnson a run for his money on the offensive side of the ball was Coenen. He beat one-on-one coverage twice, once for 40 yards and then for a 76-yard touchdown. He showed his great footwork with a few quick moves to pick up ten yards on a punt return. In the second half, he used a double move to get open for a 36-yard touchdown catch. He also did damage out of the backfield. He picked up five yards up the middle and then off the right side and then scored on a twenty-yard touchdown run.
AJ Boarman AJ Boarman 6'4" | 185 lbs | QB Holy Angels | 2023 State MN Holy Angels QB
Borman came out slinging it. He hit a deep ball for 40 yards on the game’s first drive. Then, on a third and long, he went deep again for 35 yards. He showed his strong arm wasn’t just down the field. He fired a great pass to the sidelines for a completion. On a critical 4th and goal from the four-yard line, he threw a perfect touch pass into the corner of the end zone. He didn’t throw it much, but he made them count. He averaged over 25 yards per completion.
Grant Muffenbier Grant Muffenbier 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Chanhassen | 2023 State MN Chanhassen QB
Early in the game, Muffenbier picked up a first down on a designed run. He threw three picture-perfect deep balls that either went for touchdowns or set up touchdowns – including touchdown strikes for 37 and 76 yards. While he only completed five passes, he racked up over 200 yards passing.
Charles Gilbert III Holy Angels WR
To say Gilbert was Boarman’s favorite target would be an understatement. Every completion went to Gilbert. He beat one-on-one coverage for a 40-yard gain. Then, he caught another one-on-one ball for 35 yards. He hauled in an out route on the sidelines for a first down. He showed his vertical getting up in the air to catch a fade for a touchdown.
Maxwell Woods Maxwell Woods 5'11" | 180 lbs | RB Chanhassen | 2024 State MN Chanhassen RB
Woods made an excellent cut early in the game that led to a big gain. Most of his damage was done between the tackles, grinding out yards, and first downs. Late in the game, maybe his best run was up the middle and picked up twenty yards.
Josh Och Josh Och 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Chanhassen | 2023 State MN Chanhassen WR
Och took a short pass in the flat, broke the initial tackle, and got down the sidelines for a fifty-six-yard gain. It wasn’t big on the stat sheet, but he caught a short hitch route that was tipped at the line of scrimmage. On special teams, he uncorked a 40-yard punt.
