Some of the very best teams in the state are among the small schools in a small area of northeast Kansas. The rivalries are furious and traditions are rich.
The final week won’t probably determine much, as few of these teams will be challenged in their final week. But there’s plenty to look forward to from these teams come playoff time.
Holton:
The third-ranked team in 3A is 7-0 and finishes the season with Jefferson West. The Wildcats rely almost exclusively on the ground game and spread the load among several backs. Junior Jayden Fletcher leads the ground gainers with 661 yards. Junior Garyson Booth has 523 yards, followed by junior [player_tooltip player_id="87855" first="Matt" last="Lierz"] with 473.
The Wildcats are chased in 3A by sixth-ranked Riley County, which is also 7-0, and eighth-ranked Hayden.
Rossville:
The top team in 2A defeated arch rival Silver Lake last Friday, but may have suffered a greater loss in an injury to star quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="35598" first="Torrey" last="Horak"]. Horak is one of the most experienced and successful quarterbacks in the state. He was replaced Friday by Corey Catron, who rushed for 136 yards and a touchdown and passed for 33 yards and a TD. With Horak, Rossville is the favorite to repeat in 2A. Without him, the gap narrows considerably.
Silver Lake:
It’s a sign of the power of the Mid-East League that the third-best team is rated fourth in the state. The 24-19 loss to Rossville was a bitter disappointment. But the Eagles won’t fold their tents. Senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="91395" first="Daigan" last="Kruger"] fills the air with footballs and leads a high-octane attack. Watch for junior Kamryn Kaniper, an emerging receiver with some impressive athleticism, to make an impact.
Osage City:
On the heels of Silver Lake in 2A is fifth-rated Osage City. The Indians attempt 18 passes per game and have a variety of weapons. Junior [player_tooltip player_id="87644" first="Landon" last="Boss"] leads the team, having thrown for 1000 yards and rushed for 399 and 11 touchdowns. Boss has passed for 10 touchdowns without throwing a pick. Senior Brody Littrell is the leading rusher with 523 yards and 10 touchdowns.
