Jaylen Lassic DT Lanier
Lassic was a standout in an overall dominating defensive performance vs. Russell County. He dominated the trenches with pure strength and bull rush moves. He also maintained significant leverage off the snap. The play of the night was a pick-six where he showed his diverse skillset. He pursued the QB and altered the throwing lane by extending vertically and batting the ball down before catching it. He then proceeded to turn into a ball carrier and shrugged off a tackle while getting to the end zone without a hiccup. For perspective, he’s all of 252 pounds moved gracefully through these actions. Lastly, his motor is through the roof. He came up with a sack the next drive and ran down multiple plays from behind throughout the game. Lassic has all the ability to become a D1 prospect and one of the best players in the state.
DJ Epps WR/ RB Russell County
Epps is a dynamic playmaker and is one of the more electrifying players in the area. His versatility resulted in 203 all-purpose yards. Epps showed explosiveness in every phase of the game while having a 50+ yard reception, 40+ yard run, and a 30-yard pass play. With the game evolving to a more fluid, position less space game Epps is a hybrid that will excel at the next level. His speed, quickness, acceleration, and positional dexterity put him in the conversation for one of the top hybrids in the state.
AJ Black WR/ KR Russell County
Black primarily operated as a return specialist for Lainer as he racked up 149 yards in total return yardage. His shiftiness made him a difficult target in the open field and created extra yardage from situations where he should’ve Been stopped. Black also did an excellent job of reading blocks and making decisive cuts to gain yardage. He also had a 30-yard reception which showed a flash of potential for him to be more involved as a wideout. For now, Black could easily be used as gadget player in any system due to his straight line speed and shiftiness.
Jecorious Smith SS Lanier
Smith showed a high IQ and looked like someone who could play at the next level. He made an excellent read on the RPO and played both the run and the pass leading to a crucial deflection in the end zone. Showed an ability to punch above his weight when it comes to tackling and being an enforcer in the run game. Demonstrated an ability to flow sideline to sideline when pursuing action on outside runs. Showed versatility by lining up in the slot, sub linebacker position, and strong safety.
Calvin Williams DB Russell County
Williams was a defensive standout for Russel County. He covered the deep ball well and showed good fluidity in the hips when transitioning out of his backpedal. He also remained calm at the moment of truth and looked back to try and make a play on the ball. Williams was also very effective in the run game by setting the edge and making solid open field tackles whenever needed. Williams can be an asset to a team at the next level.
