While many programs across the state of Florida are starting to get some well-deserved recognition, it may be wise not to leave Miami Gulliver Prep out of the conversation.
Coach Earl Sims' Raiders may not have turned heads like Venice, Tampa Jesuit and other schools who have gotten out of the gate fast, this team just happens to be one of the unbeatens, heading into week seven.
What this program has been able to do over the past two seasons is win all the games during the regular season – losing only in the 4A playoffs. Two years ago to eventual state champion Miami Booker T. Washington, and last season to eventual winner Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons.
Despite a close (39-38) to TRU Prep Academy, the Raiders have rolled over Bradenton Manatee (20-7), North Palm Beach Benjamin (49-14), Miami-Dade Christian (43-0) and most recently a dominating 52-27 win over two-time defending 2A state champion Champagnat Catholic.
With a bye week coming up, it's next Friday's matchup with powerhouse Chaminade-Madonna that will certainly tell how good this team really is. The Lions have beaten two national powers on the road during a very challenging season.
SENIOR CLASS IS LOADED
The end result of how good this program has become actually started with this senior class three years ago.
Quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="50150" first="Carson" last="Haggard"] (6-0, 170) and receiver [player_tooltip player_id="50037" first="Decarlo" last="Donaldson"] (6-3, 210), both Tulane commits, have indeed been catalysts for this program. So have University of Virginia-bound kicker [player_tooltip player_id="50085" first="Will" last="Bettridge"] (5-11, 165), [player_tooltip player_id="50058" first="Travious" last="Lathan"] (WR/LB, 6-2, 200), Jonathan Fyne (LB, 5-11, 180) and versatile [player_tooltip player_id="50285" first="Jayvon" last="Only"] (S, 5-11, 205).
The senior class has also boasted offensive line standouts [player_tooltip player_id="50226" first="Patrick" last="Atkins"] (6-1, 275), Juan Capurro (6-4, 275), [player_tooltip player_id="50259" first="Bakari" last="Edwards"] (6-2, 240) and [player_tooltip player_id="128075" first="Shelton" last="Green"] (6-3, 330) – as well as Kamar Meza (WR/DB, 5-10, 175) and talented [player_tooltip player_id="212277" first="Kareem" last="Wilson"] (DE, 6-4, 240).
THE FUTURE IS NOW WITH THE UNDERCLASSMEN
As talented as the senior class – and it is outstanding, the Class of 2023 juniors have also been impressive. With nationally-rated receiver [player_tooltip player_id="127993" first="Jalen" last="Brown"] (6-2, 175), FSU commit Lamont Green Jr. (DE, 6-5, 220) and recent Notre Dame commit [player_tooltip player_id="128033" first="Sedric" last="Irvin Jr"]. (RB, 6-0, 190), this team is set for the next few years – at least.
Add in Francisco Caballero (OL, 6-3, 270), D.C. Cannon (DB, 5-10, 160), [player_tooltip player_id="128021" first="Daniel" last="Harris"] (CB, 6-2, 175), Antwaan Mays (WR/DB, 6-2, 190), Justin Neyra (OL/DE, 6-3, 215) and amazing defensive back [player_tooltip player_id="128092" first="Antonio" last="Smith"] (6-3, 185), and you have some stellar playmakers.
Class of 2024 linebacker Dylan Calero (5-10, 190) and fast-rising freshman Kenny Williams (WR/DB) are also gifted and promising as well.
