The sixth week was to highlight some impressive teams that many wanted to see – district matchups and non-district games that would certainly capture the imagination of every prep football fan.
While this year will already be remembered for the season when just about everyone played each other – and it continues this Friday night.
As we respect that there are many outstanding games this week, here are the 10 games this evening that you need to check out:
No. 11 Plantation American Heritage (5A, 1-2) at No. 2 Fort Lauderdale Cardinal Gibbons (4A, 4-0). While the defending 5A state champion Patriots have not played in nearly a month – the defending 4A champs are facing by far their biggest test in an always dangerous team. In the next three weeks, Cardinal Gibbons will play No. 3 Venice and No. 7 St. Thomas Aquinas as well.
No. 8 Hollywood Chaminade-Madonna (3A, 3-1) at No. 5. Sanford Seminole (8A, 5-0). The defending 8A state champs at home against a team that has won the 3A state title, 3 of the 4 years, and have been to the title game five straight years. The Seminoles have been tested this year, but if the Lions are healthy, they will be the toughest team this program has faced in a long time!
No. 6. Miami Central (5A, 2-2) at 19. Miami Northwestern (6A, 4-1). In a kickoff classic and a regular season game against IMG Academy, the Bulls have given up over 100 points. The Rockets lost in California to the No. 2 team in the country and No. 11 team in the nation. On the surface, Central has an advantage as a two-time state champion. But this is a game that never makes sense, so hold on tight.
No. 9. Jacksonville Trinity Christian (2A, 5-0) at No. 14 Jacksonville Bolles (4A, 5-0). Both programs are truly what Duval County produces each and every year. Both have been to more than their share of state championships – and the Conquerors, who moved to 2A this year, won 3A in Tallahassee a year ago. Bolles has been 4A runner-up the past two seasons. This is a game that you do not want to miss.
Hialeah Champagnat Catholic (2A, 3-1) at No. 10 Miami Gulliver Prep (4A, 4-0). While the two-time defending 2A state champs continue to play top programs and get ready for the post season, they know that a sixth consecutive trip to the state finals can only be achieved by playing top-flight teams. The Raiders have not lost in the regular season in three years, and with so much talent, this afternoon (4:00) game will set the tempo for the state’s elite matchups.
Seffner Armwood (7A, 4-1) at Tampa Bay Tech (7A, 4-0). You remember Armwood. They are the program that dominated for so many years – and showed up in the state finals routinely. Well, they are still here and the competition has become much better – and with the Tampa Bay Tech, you have the kind of team that has more than proven that they belong. Winner here will be sitting in great position with the state playoffs not far away.
No. 25. Lynn Haven Mosley (7A, 5-0) at Fort Walton Beach Choctawhatchee (6A, 4-1). Before he worked with the FHSAA, Frank Beasley was an outstanding coach, and now as he has returned to the sidelines, his team will once again be up against it in a Mosley team that has stood up to every challenge this season. The Indians realize that the Dolphins are for real and have shown it all season.
Autauga Academy, Alabama (5-0) at Quincy Munroe (2A, 5-0). In beating their five opponents by combined 167-9 margin, the Bobcats are without exception, the most under-the-radar program in Florida. As they square off with their also dominant and undefeated opponent, this is a game that could finally expose the great job they are doing.
Sarasota (8A, 4-1) at Sarasota Riverview (8A, 4-1). This once heated rivalry faded for many years – as the Sailors were down. But with tremendous coaching and big time prospects on both sides of the ball, the rivalry is back and it means something as these two programs will have a chance to capture the interest of a city.
Tampa Gaither (7A, 3-2) at Trinity Mitchell (7A, 4-1). In the past 16 games, the Mustangs are 14-2, and while they did not reach the state finals last season, this is a program that can make a major statement this evening against a quality Gaither program that has been as active year-round as anyone. Gaither’s only two setbacks came to Armwood and unbeaten Tampa Bay Tech.
