Wysong, who signed with New Mexico earlier this year following a stellar career at Cleveland High, started at wide receiver and finished with a team-high six receptions for 48 yards in the Lobos’ season-opening 27-17 victory over Houston Baptist Thursday night at UNM Stadium.
Six targets, six catches. Pretty nice production from a true freshman appearing in a major college football game for the first time.
Clearly, the Lobos sought to take advantage of his speed.
“ Luke Wysong Luke Wysong 5'10" | WR Cleveland | 2021 State NM did an outstanding job”, UNM head coach Danny Gonzales said afterwards. “We need to block better on the perimeter for him. A couple of those, he was catching the ball and getting hit before he had an opportunity to put his foot in the ground. Obviously, he can make people miss.”
Based on their performances in the first game, Wysong and fellow true freshman Keyonte Lanier (5 receptions for 72 yards, 1 TD) from Long Beach, CA appear to be two of the Lobos’ most promising young receivers.
Wysong’s first career catch came on the fourth play of UNM’s second possession when he grabbed a 15-yard pass from UNM quarterback Terry Wilson. Soon thereafter, he caught an 11-yarder and 22-yarder on consecutive plays.
By the end of the first quarter, he had three catches for 48 yards.
Gonzales pointed to Wysong as an example of the Lobo’s improved talent in 2021 compared to 2020.
NOTES:
— Former Los Lunas running back O’Maury Samuels finally made his NM State debut last Saturday. Samuels caught a swing pass on the first play of the game for 14 yards. The running back finished with 48 total yards (28 rec, 20 rush) in the Aggies Week 0 loss to UTEP.
— Former Cleveland LB Dion Hunter finished with 5 tackles, 1 sack and 1 TFL for the Lobos.
