For the third straight game, Lower Richland limited the opposing offense to just one touchdown and the result is a 3-0 start for the Diamond Hornets.
While the defense has been stout, the offense, which is led by senior quarterback Robert Adams and a plethora of playmakers, has helped Lower Richland to outscore its opponents 105-20 so far this season.
It was more of the same in the 35-6 victory over visiting Hilton Head Friday night.
Adams tossed two touchdown passes – one each to Nate Branch and Ty Washington-Hunt – to give him four touchdown passes on the season. Branch, a shifty, nimble junior receiver has three of those scores. His touchdown pass against the Seahawks came on a short slant rout where he made two defenders miss before he powered in for the 18-yard score. Branch is a dangerous return man as well.
Jeremy Barney, who is a 6-2, 250-pound senior, added two more touchdowns against Hilton Head to run his season total to seven. Barney is a load to tackle and rarely does the first defender bring him down. Sophomore Dakari Sumter is a 6-foot-8, 380-pound left tackle that helps pave the way up front. Sumter is only going to get better with experience and could be one of the top offensive linemen in the state in the 2024 Class.
Defensively, Lower Richland is a little undersized but that has not seemed to hinder them so far. Junior linebacker Braylin Scott-Joyner, a little undersized himself, packs a wallop and made several hard-hitting tackles against Hilton Head. Junior Demonti Garrett is a force at defensive end.
Hilton Head was playing its first game of the season and were missing several starters due to covid protocols. [player_tooltip player_id="59462" first="Jaylen" last="Sneed"], the No. 5 prospect in the state and Notre Dame commit, did a little bit of everything Friday night. He lined up at various linebacker spots, free safety and a couple of times stepped up to the edge of the line of scrimmage. He also played Wildcat quarterback.
Senior Ryan Clark played both ways. He manned one of the defensive tackle spots and started at right guard.
