It’s officially time to buckle up in the Pee Dee and Lowcountry.
Four games grab our attention this week, primarily because three are huge region matchups and the last one is arguably the best non-region game in the entire state this week. It just so happens that all eight teams who comprise this list have some of the best offenses and offensive weapons up and down the coast.
Dillon (1-0, 1-0) at Aynor (2-0, 0-0)
No big deal, just the de facto region championship happening in September. These teams don’t have a ton of field time this year, but we do know that it’s going to be a match-up to two strong rushing attacks. Dillon’s [player_tooltip player_id="59479" first="Nemo" last="Squire"] went off four 116 yards and four touchdowns in the team’s opener last week against Loris. Meanwhile, Aynor is led by [player_tooltip player_id="200760" first="Ahmad" last="Gerald"] and [player_tooltip player_id="200759" first="Garrison" last="Gasque"], the top two hitters in the Blue Jackets’ old-school Wing T variation.
North Myrtle Beach (2-1, 0-1) at South Florence (3-1, 0-0)
North Myrtle Beach can not afford to drop a second straight region game this early in the season, and that means the Chiefs will likely attempt to put its best players out front early and often. Expect North Myrtle Beach to get the ball into the hands of receivers [player_tooltip player_id="89308" first="Chandler" last="McCall"] and KJ Stanley, as well as running back (and defensive starter) [player_tooltip player_id="91208" first="Elijah" last="Vereen"]. That’s because South Florence’s offense has evolved around junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="146356" first="LaNorris" last="Sellers"]. The Bruins are averaging 51 points per game and only have last week’s triple overtime loss at South Pointe as a blemish on the record.
West Florence (4-0, 1-0) at Hartsville (1-3, 1-0)
The tour de force in what is the Region VI-4A schedule will take center stage in Kelleytown on Friday. And make no mistake with the Red Foxes’ losing record; they are every bit the contenders for a top-two finish in the region, with West Florence also in that conversation. West running back [player_tooltip player_id="91198" first="Terry" last="McKithen"] (654 yards, 13 touchdowns) and quarterback Orlando Hudson (787 total yards) make this ship go, while Hartsville has the two-heading running back tandem of [player_tooltip player_id="202738" first="J’Shawn" last="Anderson"] and Carmello McDaniel.
Fort Dorchester (3-0) at Myrtle Beach (2-0)
Fort Dorchester quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="89345" first="Zolten" last="Osborne"] and his talented crop of receivers are going to bring what is the No. 2 team in Class 5A up the coast for a meeting with the Class 4A No. 3 Seahawks. And, all we can say is bombs away. These two high-powered offenses will almost certainly put up a ton of points, with Myrtle Beach countering Osborne and Co. with quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="59494" first="Ryan" last="Burger"] and receivers [player_tooltip player_id="59464" first="Adam" last="Randall"], Jon Simmons and Jake Doty.
