It is hard to believe we are a month into the prep football season, but here we are.
Week 5 featured some incredible wins and even more impressive individual performances. And we would like to recognize those that put forth extra effort on the gridiron to help their team.
[player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"] - Algona - QB/DB - 6-2 - 195
A two-time all-district selection and one of the highest-graded quarterbacks in his class, [player_tooltip player_id="23975" first="Tyler" last="Manske"] just continues to evolve. The Algona standout led his team to a 28-27 victory over North Polk by completing 20 of 31 passes for 279 yards with three touchdowns.
Manske, though, was also effective in keeping the ball in his own hands with 12 carries for another 34 yards. His ability to stand and deliver, while also showing more than enough speed and athleticism to take off on his own, is what separates Manske from others.
He is the prototypical dual-threat in that he might not look like a speedster on the field, but when you give him a little hole, he can take advantage.
[player_tooltip player_id="148877" first="Jackson" last="Morton"] - Greene County - WR/DB - 6-1 - 175
When Greene County needs a big play, they look to [player_tooltip player_id="148877" first="Jackson" last="Morton"]. When they need a first down, quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="98647" first="Bryce" last="Stalder"] looks Morton’s way. And the talented senior delivers time and time again.
Morton does an incredible job of looking the ball in. He finished this past week with seven receptions for 136 yards and two touchdowns, averaging over 19 yards per catch. But he is not only a great pair of hands, but he has a nice, smooth stride once in the open field.
Opposing defensive backs have no chance to catch Morton once he sees green in front of him.
[player_tooltip player_id="148361" first="Caden" last="Matson"] - Humboldt - QB/DB - 6-0 - 180
Homecoming was a special moment again for [player_tooltip player_id="148361" first="Caden" last="Matson"], as the Humboldt senior threw for 213 yards, ran for 108 and scored three touchdowns in a convincing win. Matson was extremely accurate, completing 15 of 18 with a quarterback rating of nearly 183.
He also showed off those legs by averaging almost five yards per carry on 22 attempts. Matson isn’t just a standout passer, his running ability makes him almost unstoppable. Matson has shown incredible improvements over the past two seasons, being able to hit his receivers in motion for big plays and making them on his own with his feet.
Thomas Meyer - Clear Lake - WR/LB - 6-3 - 170
Here is a new name to keep on the radar moving forward, as Thomas Meyer picked up a pair of sacks in a win for Clear Lake this past Friday night. There will be plenty of interest in Meyer, as he has only room to grow checking in at 6-foot-3 and 170 pounds.
Meyer is also a key piece of the offense for the Lions, having caught two passes for 41 yards. Give this prospect two more years in a big-time weight room like Clear Lake, and he’ll be having college coaches making the visit north weekly.
