We have reached the second week of September and things are getting closer to region play. The Midlands features a handful of games where teams will try to rebound from losses and others will hope to continue the momentum they’ve built with early season wins.
BLYTHEWOOD AT RICHLAND NORTHEAST
This is a game that was not on the schedule at the beginning of the season. But because of covid cancellations, these two Richland Two schools are able to play. Both teams are coming off their first loss of the season. But there is plenty of talent that should be on display. Desmond Boatwright leads Blythewood with 470 yards rushing. Myles Cotton has been a tackling machine with 28 on the season thus far. Richland Northeast will counter with Dylon O’Neal at quarterback. Avonte Grant has been a positive at running back as well. One name that will play and for folks to remember is Will Wilson, a Class of 2025 athlete.
BROOKLAND-CAYCE AT CHAPMAN
This is a battle of top 5 teams in the latest Class 3A polls. Brookland-Cayce handed Class 5A Blythewood its first loss last week. Jordan Wise was the offensive catalyst with 10 catches for 122 yards. Linebackers Owen Plane and Benjamin Pugh helped limit the Bengals to just three points. Chapman counters with one of the top scoring offenses in the state. [player_tooltip player_id="153248" first="Drew" last="Settle"] has thrown for 734 yards already. Leading receiver [player_tooltip player_id="153245" first="DJ" last="Black"] has 15 catches for 298 yards.
KEENAN AT C.A. JOHNSON
Keenan played its first game last week and won over Dreher. [player_tooltip player_id="103634" first="Marquece" last="Williams"] led the way with 232 yards rushing and one touchdown. C.A. Johnson has won two in a row after opening the season with a loss. Dawan Rice has six rushing scores on the season and 297 yards. [player_tooltip player_id="91245" first="Isom" last="Harris"] has thrown for 319 yards. Terrell Hopkins leads the defense with 21 tackles.
LOWER RICHLAND AT A.C. FLORA
Lower Richland is 3-0 on the season. Lamarion Pearson (384 yards) and Jeremy Barney (seven touchdowns) lead the way on the ground with Robert Adams throwing to Nate Branch for the Diamond Hornets. A.C. Flora is the defending Class 4A state champion and the top-ranked team this year. They have one played once but have one of the top defenses in the state. Tyrell Green, Jacob Croffie, and Tyler Robinson limited Sumter to 125 yards in the lone win.
RIDGE VIEW AT GRAY COLLEGIATE
This might be the marquee matchup in the Midlands this week. Both teams are ranked in their respective classes and have talent galore. [player_tooltip player_id="89314" first="Kazarius" last="Adams"] has already rushed for 556 yards for Gray Collegiate. Tre Robinson has thrown for 324 yards. Tory Kelly and [player_tooltip player_id="60990" first="Jordan" last="Robinson"] have been key for the War Eagles defense. [player_tooltip player_id="153263" first="Andre" last="Washington"] controls the Ridge View offensive attack. The South Carolina State commit has thrown for 445 yards. His top targets are Zion Agnew and [player_tooltip player_id="92205" first="Chase" last="Smith"].
