Week 3 of the New Mexico High School football season was filled with plenty of exceptional performances. Here are some of the top performers:
<strong>Andres Aguirre, Albuquerque High</strong>: Aguirre rushed for 155 yards and scored five TDs in Albuquerque’s 50-0 win over Del Notre Thursday night.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="134908" first="Colton" last="Graham"], Hobbs</strong>: One of the top dual threat quarterbacks in the state, Graham scored a pair of TDs in Hobbs’ 14-0 victory over Roswell, a 29-yard run in the first quarter and a 1-yard plunge in the third.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="139521" first="Evan" last="Wysong"], Cleveland</strong>: It was a good week for the Wysong brothers. Thursday, Luke had a sparkling debut for New Mexico. Twenty-four hours later, Evan led Cleveland to a rout of Manzano by throwing two TD passes, catching a TD pass from Elijah Brody and kicking all the PATs.
<strong>Julian Munoz, Capital</strong>: The Jaguars QB rushed for 3 touchdowns and passed for two more, accounting for 5 TDs in Capital’s OT win over Moriarty. In OT, Munoz threw a TD pass before winning the race to the right pylon for the game-winning 2-point conversion. He rushed for 119 yards and threw for 192 yards and two touchdowns.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138053" first="Cayden" last="Walton"], Raton</strong>: The Tigers ran just 27 plays in their 49-16 win over border rival Trinidad (Co.) but Walton had 206 yards rushing on just 11 carries, including a 55-yard TD run.
<strong>Gabriel Buie, La Cueva</strong>: Buie rushed for three TDs, - two in the fourth quarter – in La Cueva’s huge 28-10 road win at Las Cruces. Two of Buie’s TDs came on runs of 46 and 43 yards, respectively.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138088" first="Javyn" last="Morales"], Goddard</strong>: Arguably the state’s fastest player, Morales is a major reason Goddard is ranked No. 3 in the state overall (and the highest ranked Class 5A team). He rushed for 171 yards and 3 TDs on 17 carries in Goddard’s 49-6 win over Deming.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26227" first="Zach" last="Vigil"], Rio Rancho</strong>: The state’s top running back scored three rushing touchdowns, the first a 58-yard scamper in the third quarter before adding two more TDs in the fourth when the Rams pulled away from Eldorado.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26251" first="Zakk" last="Thomas"], Kirtland Central</strong>: Thomas scored 8 rushing touchdowns (tying for the second highest single game total in state history) and amassed more than 500 yards in all-purpose yards as Kirtland Central’s offense scored 63 points against Taos. He’s also a linebacker on the Kirtland Central defense.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26265" first="Martell" last="Mora"], Santa Fe</strong>: Arguably the state’s player so far this season, Mora came up big for Santa Fe as the Demons finally snapped a 12-game, 13-year losing streak to city rival St. Michael’s. Mora rushed for 94 yards (5 runs of 13+ yards) and returned a punt 70 yards for a touchdown. He also sparked a Demons defense that shut down the St. Michael’s offense over the final three quarters.
<strong>Marc Armenta, Bloomfield</strong>: The Bobcats WR caught 4 passes for 102 yards and scored two TDS as Bloomfield cruised past Grants on the road, 52-0. Bloomfield hosts Albuquerque Academy Friday night in a key Class 4A contest.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="137884" first="A.J." last="Rivera"], Albuquerque Academy</strong>: Led Academy to its third win of the season, a hard-fought 21-20 victory over Hope Christian, by throwing for 311 yards, 179 in the first quarter.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="137928" first="Kellan" last="Gehres"], Albuquerque Academy</strong>: Gehres had 7 receptions for 132 yards, including a key TD catch in the final seconds of the first half that proved to be the difference in Academy’s 21-20 win over Hope Christian.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="137890" first="Alejandro" last="Sapien"], St. Pius X</strong>: Sapien threw four TD passes in St. Pius X’s 31-28 loss to Valley Saturday afternoon.
<strong>Berto Zamora, Las Cruces</strong>: The senior receiver caught two passes of 30+ yards in the Bulldawgs’ 28-10 loss to La Cueva.
<strong>Anthony Carrillo, Mayfield</strong>: Carrillo helped spark a stellar defensive performance by the Trojans in a 47-10 victory over Organ Mountain. Carrillo had a 65-yard Pick-6 TD in the second quarter as Mayfield was never threatened after taking a 20-3 halftime lead.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26232" first="Brandon" last="Furbee"], Farmington</strong>: Furbee was flawless in Farmington’s 53-0 victory over Highland, throwing 3 TD passes to <strong>Ethan Thomas</strong> and running for one TD. He exited the game without throwing an incompletion against the overmatched Hornets defense.
<strong>Ryan Sharpe, Bloomfield</strong>: The Bobcats QB completed 10-of-12 passes as the Bloomfield offense didn’t commit a turnover in the mercy rule win over Grants.
<strong>Ricky Henderson, Valley</strong>: Led Valley to the 31-28 victory over St. Pius X at Milne Stadium with a 35-yard TD run.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="137885" first="Paul" last="Cieremans"], Los Lunas</strong>: Cieremans continues to terrorize opposing defenses, adding three more rushing touchdowns to his season total in Los Lunas’ 41-13 road victory over West Mesa. In 3 games, Cieremans has 322 rushing yards and 8 rushing touchdowns, sparking Los Lunas to the No. 4 overall ranking in the state by MaxPreps.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="26233" first="Isaac" last="Hinson"], Lovington</strong>: Hinson made one of the clutch plays of the weekend, catching a TD pass with seconds remaining to help Lovington outlast Alamogordo, 22-21, Friday on the road. He caught 4 passes for 40 yards, rushed twice for 68 yards, averaged 12 yards on 3 punt returns and made 7 tackles on defense.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="135336" first="Joseph" last="Perez"], Lovington</strong>: Keyed Lovington’s defensive effort at Alamogordo with 10 tackles, 4 TFL, 1 sack and 1 interception.
<strong>Diego Molinar, Bernalillo</strong>: Molinar had two of Bernalillo‘s six interceptions against Los Alamos as the Spartans pitched their third consecutive shutout to start the 2021 season.
<strong>Jacob Pino, Bernalillo</strong>: Pino threw four touchdown passes for the Spartans in their 35-0 win over Los Alamos.
<strong>Devin Gonzales, Hot Springs</strong>: Gonzales scored three touchdowns, including a 65-yard punt return, as Hot Springs traveled to Lordsburg and came away with a 34-20 victory.
