BVSW was determined to pick up their first win at their new district stadium in front of a rocking crowd. Meanwhile, Leavenworth was looking to spoil their home opener and get their third win of the season.
There was a surplus of talent on both sides of the ball for each team, but the big story from this game was the turnover battle. The Timberwolves took advantage of four Pioneer turnovers, as they held off Leavenworth in a 28-21 victory. Take a look at the nine prospects that stood out during this exciting Week 4 matchup (Unofficial Stats).
Offense:
Dylan Dunn – BVSW, QB, Class of ’24
Dunn was an unknown sophomore coming into the ’21 season, but now he is one of the leading passers in the state. It’s safe to say the varsity lights aren’t too bright for him. Going into Week 4 he’d already thrown for over 700 yards, and during this game he eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark. Dunn went 19/24 with 295 yards and two touchdowns. The future is looking bright for the Timberwolves with this young man under center.
Eddie McLaughlin Eddie McLaughlin 5'10" | 185 lbs | ATH Leavenworth | 2023 State KS – LV, QB, Class of ’23
Finally getting to see McLaughlin play was truly a treat. He came into this season as the 27th ranked prospect in our Class of ’23 rankings for a reason. The junior made some unbelievable plays and accounted for 267 yards of total offense with three total touchdowns. If he can take care of the football, the Pioneers could be a threat come playoff time.
Zach Atkins Zach Atkins 6'4" | 200 lbs | WR Blue Valley SW | 2022 State KS – BVSW, WR, Class of ’22
Zach Atkins Zach Atkins 6'4" | 200 lbs | WR Blue Valley SW | 2022 State KS is as good as advertised. He had a great junior campaign and he’s on pace for a monster senior year. The wide out kept his streak of consecutive 100-yard games alive, as he went on to haul in 10 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown. He’s a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Atkins should have several recruiters reaching out to him by the end of the season.
Sam Curtis – LV, RB, Class of ’23
Curtis is another prospect that flew under the radar prior to this season, but he’s quietly making a name for himself. The junior showed he can run between the tackles and displays a quick burst once he hits the hole. The Pioneers fed him the rock 20 times and he went on to rush for 105 yards. His performance this season has earned him a spot in the next Class of ’23 rankings update.
Alexander Finn– LV, WR, Class of ’23
Finn is another talented playmaker on offense for the Pioneers. He’s their leading receiver so far this season and continued to be a deep threat against the Timberwolves. The Pioneers favored the run more in this contest, but Finn made the most of his targets. He had three receptions for 100 yards with one score and rushed for 21 yards on three carriers. Finn, McLaughlin, and Curtis are a dangerous trio of juniors that could help lead the Pioneers on a playoff run this season.
Defense:
Jake Laurie Jake Laurie 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Blue Valley Southwest | 2022 State KS – BVSW, RB/LB, Class of ’22
The 66th ranked prospect in the Class of ’22 put together a solid all-around performance. On offense, he rushed 56 yards on 14 carries with one touchdown, and on defense he racked up eight total tackles.
Willie George – LV, DB, Class of ’22
George came into this contest as one of the leading tacklers for the Pioneers, and he was at it once again against the Timberwolves. His name was called often in the second half, as he accumulated eight total tackles on the night.
Connor Falkner Connor Falkner 6'0" | 195 lbs | LB Blue Valley Southwest | 2023 State KS – BVSW, LB, Class of ’23
This junior backer put together a great performance. He came into Week 4 as the second leading tackler for Southwest, but he took charge against Leavenworth. The junior piled up 11 total tackles and came up with a sack.
Emmitt Peters – BVSW, DB, Class of ’24
Peters has been one Southwest’s best defensive backs so far this season and he showed that against the Pioneers. The sophomore racked up seven total tackles and made a key interception in the fourth quarter.
