Continue ReadingThe long time Brophy vs St Mary’s rivalry finally came back in 2021, but it was extremely one sided and a flat out blowout. Brophy beat up St. Mary’s 49-0 and was absolutely dominant on both sides of the ball. Unfortunately, St. Mary’s promising 2022 QB Nick Martinez Nick Martinez 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB St. Mary's | 2022 State AZ was injured in their second series of the game, and this thing got out of hand in a hurry. St. Mary’s did not cross midfield, and Brophy continued to keep the pressure coming. A loud week 1 W for Brophy. Take a look at the offensive standouts from Friday night:
Offensive MVP: EJ Warner EJ Warner 6'0" | 195 lbs | QB Brophy Prep | 2022 State AZ , QB, Brophy ’22
Warner had a huge night for Brophy and did exactly what I projected him to do back in my QB series. He played with a chip on his shoulder and threw for 356 yards and 5 TD’s while adding another TD on the ground. He displayed excellent mechanics in the pocket with good anticipation for routes and concepts to develop, and delivered with a quick and fluid release. He showed the ability to hit tight window throws on numerous seams, and did a great job using touch and throwing receivers open on certain throws. I don’t expect Warner’s production to slow down anytime soon.
Layton Duncan Layton Duncan 6'1" | 180 lbs | WR Brophy | 2023 State AZ , WR, Brophy ’23
Duncan made a statement Friday night as he hauled in 2 TD’s in the week 1 matchup. He’s a clean route runner and does a good job setting up his routes. He ran a nice delayed slant and was able snag it in the back of the endzone, flashing good body control along the boundary to tap a foot in-bounds. He’s shifty in space as he was able to make a few guys miss on a screen and pick up a chunk of yards. Big potential for Duncan.
Tyler Powell Tyler Powell 6'7" | 240 lbs | TE Brophy Prep | 2022 State AZ , TE/WR, Brophy ’22
Powell was a fun player to watch live. He sizes up with tremendous length and an athletic build at 6’7″ 240lbs, making him a constant mismatch with his size alone. He showed the ability to win contested catches and possesses strong hands all-around. He anticipates contact well as he caught a few seams and was able to secure the catch with ease. Good physicality after the catch as well, as he proved why he is a P5 talent (Arizona commit) on Friday night.
Max Ware, WR, Brophy ’22
Ware had a nice TD in the 2nd quarter where he was able to take the top off the St. Mary’s defense and track down a deep post in the endzone for the score. According to MaxPreps, his stat line totaled 4 receptions for 75 yards and a TD. On that deep TD reception, Ware flashed solid speed and body control to track it down and make a sliding catch in the endzone. Ware could possibly see an increase in targets as the season goes on, as he flashed solid potential.
Brophy Offensive Line
The Brophy OL played lights out all night, as all of them up front deserve to be on the top offensive players list. They frequently gave Warner all day to sit back and dice up St. Mary’s defense. Excellent in pass pro as they were dominant up front, and they even opened up some big gaps when Brophy did run the ball, which included a long 60+ yard TD run in the 4th quarter. Hats off to the Brophy OL.
